Where Is The Steve Smith Extension?

.... LaFell and Gettis don't strike me as #1 WR's... #2's all day.... but we would have to draft a #1 this year in order for it to play out the way you say.

Rivera: "Hey Smitty, you just had one of your best seasons, were going to move you down the depth chart and move players that have been decent at best into the number 1 spot, oh and here is a contract for you to sign that has number values for a #2 WR even tho you have 60% of the teams receptions...."

I am of the opinion that Smitty should be a slot WR now. The fact that he is still our #1 is due to Hurney's inability to spot WR talent. Smitty would be awesome in the slot where he would not face double teams. His size is a detriment on the outside, but he has overcome it. Still, he would be even better in the slot if we had a true #1

100% agree and this is the reason why i say Smitty should be our N°1 for the next seasons.

But don't get me wrong i like like both Gettis and Lafell they are both talented and one of them could become our N°1, the door is open.

I wasnt aruging that point... i was arguing this:

The whole slot receiver versus number 1 receiver debate is ridiculous. First of all we move him around as it is so he is sometimes in the slot, sometimes on the left side, etc. But the notion of having him being a slot receiver is to allow him not to be covered by their best corner which would presumably be our best wideout on the outside. As a slot receiver he would be covered by a third corner, nickel or perhaps even a safety.

Lets be real though. No matter where he lines up, do any of you think the opposition isn't going to put their best corner on him. Sure we could hypothetically get a Mike WIlliams or for that matter Calvin Johnson type guy as our 1, but they don't go on trees and take time to develop. Anyone think that if we had drafted Julio Jones last year or we draft Blackmon this year, they still won't have their best corner on Smith???

We do need to replace him eventually but to assume that he is not going to be our number 1 this year or even in the future, is wishful thinking. At tp assume moving him to the slot and putting Gettis out wide changes anything id delusional.

If we had an A J Green or even a Juilo Jones type WR then no...Smitty wouldnt get the best CB in the slot. Threat of a deep Cam connection would prohibit that.

Wes Welker is the king of the slot and rarely do teams have their #1 on him. Pats didn't even have a Gettis caliber deep threat. The 2nd meeting with the Jets this past year is the only occasion a team has actually done it to my knowledge for a game.

If we have the talent to allow Smitty to move to the slot, that would be the bomb. The problem comes with the fact that we don't run many 3WR sets. IMO, moving Smitty around, even being in motion, is the best option. With movement comes the posibility of missed coverages, or blown assignments.

If Gettis is a full go, and can get on the field. Along with the continued development of Lafel. Gives us three quality WRs. Which could lead to those oh so seldom 3WR sets being more prevalant. This thought does excite my giddy, so I am sending Gettis all my positive vibes. I also believe that we will not use either of our first two picks on a WR, other than Blackmon, because Chud is counting on Gettis.

I can't wait to see what Chud has up his sleeve for this year. And GOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A quick aside. We have 5 skill position players on the field at every snap. Against 7 defensive players. Or 6 if you only leave 1 safety. That makes it damm near impossible to double team. So we will be seeing an awful lot of zones this year. That type of O takes time to develop with regards to timing and route adjustments. So I will be paying attention to how they go about working on this concept. How the depth chart works out, who practices with whom.

Just another aspect needing my attention. My Zod, I love this stuff.

Steve is gonna play for a while longer i bet, until he is probably 36-37... I hope that he retires a panther, i truly do.

I agree with your sentiment, but I am iffy on if he plays that long. He is a competitor. As long as he feels he is productive, I would imagine he will want to play. As a competitor, sometimes the end is difficult to see. Somehow, I don't see that from Smitty. I think the first time he can't dominate a some traing camp fodder he is going to question himself. Once those questions start, the end is nigh. I just hope, for the future's sake, that Smitty retires in good standing. That he goes out with class and dignity.

I can honestly say, that I see at least 5 more years out of Smitty. With how he takes care of himself. Having promising expectations now that we have our franchise QB. Not to forget the Offense we possess. The future is bright around here, and I see Smitty hanging around as long as he is productive. And not a minute more.

From what I know, Smitty is as happy as he has ever been. And I do mean ever. He is excited about Carolina football. I think that is very important for our future. A happy Smitty is the engine that will.

Whew, that was fun. And GOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
