The Best/worst Of Marty Hurney

I've heard for years the Panthers scouting department is all young guys with little or no talent to scout talent. I don't know any of them personally but I do hope we invest in great talent evaluators. Bucky Brooks used to work for us and he's a pretty young guy so maybe there is some truth to that.

I'd buy that if half the contracts he gives players aren't bad. He may be told what the coach wants or JR wants, but bottom line is he's average at getting what they want. And most of his drafts aren't that good either. People keep hearing "Hurney is good at the draft, Hurney is good at the draft" and it gets embedded in the posters mind and they start believing it. Go look at our drafts the last 5 years...it isn't "good", but average at best if that.

Name 5 teams that have drafted better in the last 5 years...

Heres a post I made about our drafts:

What is the justification of keeping Hurney? Otah, Brown, AE all picks we gave up picks for are now busts.

From the past 5 drafts (too early to tell for 2011):

Out of the 8 picks in 2006 only DWill and Anderson are here

Out of the 8 picks in 2007 only Beason, Kalil, and C.Johnson are here

2008 wasn't that spectacular. Otah is a bust. Barnidge and Bernadeau may not be here next season. Taylor is gone. Hayden is gone (thank God!).

Almost the entire 2009 draft is no longer on the team. Brown, Irvin, Fiametta, D.Robinson gone. Goodson may not be here next season. Maybe the samething for Martin next year.

The 2010 draft is heading that way too. Jimmy Clausen, a wasted pick. AE doesn't look like he'll be here next season. Pike is gone. McClain is gone. Stanford might not be here next season. Norwood may be out next season too.

Then you take into account the decision to give DWill a big contract when our new scheme doesn't rely on the RBs that much. Should've shopped him around. 4 mil a year to a weaker kicker as well? Ignoring the DT position after Ron Edwards went down. Not addressing a starting CB. That's just this season. Not to mention the Delhomme and Peppers f**k ups.

I just don't see the reason for keeping him around any longer.

Also, remember he wanted to actually trade up to grab Clausen but then he didn't have to? How big of a mistake would that have been?

Him being good at the draft is a big fat MYTH

To add to that, Goodson was benched this season and Martin sucked ass. Norwood was never heard from too.

It's more than just a win-loss record people. Its talent, how many QBs that we've had under Hurney were capable of winning a Superbowl? Jake at his prime (minus time off from injury) and Cam. His biggest mistake was not having a successor to Jake on the roster.

Im not straying for the Hurney is average argument, Im simply stating that its just a win-loss record.

Don't confuse the fact we don't sign lots of players in FA and therefore it makes our roster deep with drafted players that we are great at drafting

You can't simply say 2 players from the 06' season are still with the team as evidence of bad drafting. That's 6 years ago. Some players we drafted have done well elsewhere, we just couldn't pay them the same money. Think Geof Schwartz or Nick Hardwick. The reality is most NFL careers are over within 3 years. Every team runs through picks.

You cant go by the picks when rating Hurney, He seems to go with what his Scouts recommend. When we had Gregory our picks sucked. But I will say Richardson needs to take his ability to trade picks away. Trading picks for Brown and Otah was his biggest mistakes. FA and salary cap is where Hurney usually does good. Davis, Lucas, Wahle, McCree. He usually finds players and doesnt overpay them at first.

yep, his over the top deals after Fox left sealed it for me.....that he and Fox should of been tied at the hip. Both gone.

Yeah, I do believe Hurney is in the same position as Fox was. Progression needs to happen for him to stay another two years. But I think Cam would save his ass if we won the Superbowl in that time. I guess we will see how he works the contracts, because that's what is going to hurt the Panthers, not talent. We do have one of the best cores in the NFL. and with a 2nd year QB. :cam:

More interested in Rivera's results with what we have now and will add leading into the 2012 season. Looking back isn't doing any good now that Fox is gone, IMO. I always thought Hurney went with the HC's vision. We'll never know how management is influenced by ownership, coaches, and advisers. I guess that's ultimately up to the owner.
