Saints Have Three Candidates To Replace Payton

In one week, Saints coach Sean Payton will be banished from the team’s facility until the day after Super Bowl XLVII. At some point, the Saints will need to replace Payton for the 2012 season.

Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayuneexplains that the Saints have three potential candidates: offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. (pictured), defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer.

Duncan identifies Kromer as the dark-horse candidate for the job, and for good reason. Elevating him would allow Carmichael to focus on the offense and Spagnuolo to focus on the defense.

Of course, that would require the Saints to hire a new offensive line coach. Currently, Frank Smith serves as assistant offensive line coach, so he possibly would be promoted.

A non-disgruntled drew brees would be their best weapon right now. He's almost a coach by himself out there, for the offense at least.

Their offense should still be decent but I see that defense plumetting abysmally over the course of the season.

Plus, Pete Carmichael called plays the final 12 (including playoffs) games last season. They scored 42+ points in 6 of those 12 games. The Saints also game-planned one game without Sean Payton last year due to his broken leg... end result was a 62-7 win.

The 49ers went 14-2 the year after Bill Walsh retired and won the Super Bowl. The Colts went 14-2 the year after Tony Dungy retired and lost the Super Bowl. Both had HOF QBs. The Saints have a HOF QB. Payton didn't retire, but they're going to have an "Us against the world" mentality. Strap yourselves in because you're in for one wild season.

Really don't give a fug, secret Saints fan. Drew Brees still has no deal, and will NOT play under the franchise tag. Refs are gonna be calling all calls on the Saints now, that the truth is out. To say the team is not gonna take a hit without Payton is extremely dumb. 62-7? Are you really bragging about that vs the Colts? :huh:

God, when the suspensions come down? It's going to be a real s**t storm then, and people will stop with this "Don't count them out" bs. They're out, at least this season. They might still go 9-7 but I truly believe the NFC South is ours come January 2013.

While I do think Brees will be back next year, I do think its a huge plus for us. I wouldnt be surprised if Spags was named head coach, but only dealt with the Defense and clock management while Carmichael had the offense. They still do have a lot of talent, but with the team in flux as well as the coaching staff, we could see a situation similar to the Eagles this year; tons of talent, but not much to show for it.
