Coples: Chaotic Environment At Unc Contributed To 2011 Woes

Quinton Coples knows the reputation he's earned. He's heard the "questionable motor" label attached to nearly every scouting report, how he took plays off during his less-than-stellar senior season at the University of North Carolina.

And when teams ask him to explain the dip in production during his final collegiate season, Coples doesn't hide from the unflattering numbers, a product of a turbulent year in Chapel Hill, N.C., he says.

"I just tell them that there was a lot going on at the University of North Carolina," Coples said Friday during an interview with NFL.com. "We had a lot of different changes. I was asked to do another position. ... I think it got to me a little bit; just got away from me and I could recover."

Coples, of course, is talking about the impermissible benefit scandal that rocked the program, costing North Carolina head coach Butch Davis his job and prompting the early retirement of the school's athletic director. All the turmoil had an effect, said Coples, widely considered a top-10 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and he finished the year with just 7.5 sacks down from 10 in 2010.

"It took a toll because Coach Davis was definitely a lovable guy," Coples said. "He was a great coach. He helped us in all aspects. ... To see him leave and to see the coaching staff start to deteriorate, and have other coaches come in for interviews ... it took a toll on the team. The team didn't really know what direction that we were going."

Pretty good job in the interview; looks like he prepared himself pretty well. Still on the fence here.

jesus he is pouring sweat in that interview

Damn he really is. Could be a sign of lying? It's pretty hard to tell.

I'm sure Hurney and co. will do their research on this guy. UNC isn't that far away. If Hurney's happy with him, I'm down too.

You guys do realize that he's in a studio with a crap load of cameras and lights pointed at him right? I'd be sweating too. I bet it's more nerves than anything. His body language didn't specify deceit. From this interview, the combine and his pro day. If the man is there at #9 I wouldn't mind if the Panthers take him there. Having him, Hardy, Johnson, and I hope Applewhite if he signs back with us, would be a great rotation. Round two we could take the best DT available or CB.

I don't care what was going on off the field, it doesn't excuse giving a lackluster effort on the field. If he would have thrived off of the turmoil, say like Cam did, I might feel different about him. What's going to happen in 2-3 years if his position coach that he loves moves on to a different job and he doesn't like the new coach? Of what if the Rivera hire doesn't turn out like we all think it will and we have an entire staff turnover? Is he going to give the same lackluster effort that he gave this last year?

if lackluster effort gets you 7.5 sacks and 15 tfl sign me up.who cares he was seeing more attention, playing a new position as well.he should have more sacks....

And 4 of those sacks came against James Madison and Duke; clearly inferior opponents. He only registered 3.5 sacks in 10 other games against equally talented teams.

and those others came vs Va Tech, Clemson, Da U and one negated because of a defensive penalty. he still had 15 tfl which screams he was in the backfield a lot and thats with facing doubles, chips from RB and TE. Gtech probably only threw the ball 10 times but he showed up that game as well.
