In The First Round, The Panthers Select....

My official first round draft choice is... Dontari Poe.

A true nose tackle, Poe is the anchor this defensive line needs. At close to 350 pounds, he can hold his ground and disrupt what the opposing offensive lines are trying to do. While Poe will not rack up sacks or even tackles, he will be an integral and unheralded piece of the defense. Should the Panthers ever move to a 3-4, he would fit the mold.

Yes, we have Ron Edwards, a mediocre starter at best even when healthy. Now that he is coming off an injury, I have little faith.

This pick instantly improves the Panthers run defense between the tackles, where they were gashed last season at will.

So it is written, so it will be done.
Why would we need Poe? I remember your post at the beg of last season saying that McClain would be an All-Pro beast in 2 years.

The chances are that anyone we bring in at DT/DE or corner will need time to acclimate to the NFL. So to expect them to dominate day 1 is possible but highly unlikely. Positions that are easier to dominate right off the bat are linebacker on the defensive side and running back on the offense.

So the reality is that bringing in a guy to play corner, DT,or DE doesn't make them a starter day 1. Expecting them to unseat the veteran may be a tall order. I think folks need to be okay going into battle with who we have and be pleasantly surprised when a few of the rookies play better tthan expected. But I honestly wouldn't expect Poe or Coples to start until at least week 8 if at all their rookie year. They might get reps in the rotation but not start. Of everyone, I think Claiborne might get a chance but that is not assured if Hogan or Butler play well due to increased competition.

We need help right now, not week 8. Our vets arent getting any younger and this year is as good as any to make a run for the big fandango. I would think that any position that requires more strength would be hard to impact as a rookie since most guys are still developing physically. DT/DE should be the hardest to adapt to in the pros on D.

Still, if Coples isnt fighting close to a starting spot at week 1, I personally will consider it under achieving unless Hardy is destroying fools.

Decastro will be the pick, book it. You don't start cutting pretty decent starters (instead of injury proned guys like Davis) unless you have a plan to replace them (and don't make me laugh with Pollak). Positon of need and the only sure fire elite prospect left at 9 unless Claiborne falls.

You crazy. Any d lineman we draft in round 1 is an instant starter.

fug this gimme dre at #9

there's not gonna be any, dare I say "guaranteed" stud, corners past the 1st round. there's at least 5 teams that need an immediate upgrade at DB.

us being one of them IMO

We have decent DT's that will develop (McClain, Shirley, Edwards, idk about Fau, Nwogba?) and CJ is good Hardy isn't that bad.

Granted Coples would also be an awsome pick up.

Answer this question tho. Who got schooled more?

Gregy Hardy or Captain Munnerlyn?

Pep came in and competed right away. I would expect the same of Coples. If we draft him at 9, the dude needs to start and not just because we took him at 9. I would expect him to beat out Hardy. Anything less would be not living up to his potential.

Coples is not even near the talent level of Peppers and to say such things just makes you look ignorant. Matter of fact there prob is not a single player in this draft that has natural talent of Peppers.

You expect way too much out of a good but not great DE. This kid is going to need time to develop and is not going to make an impact for at least two year.

hardy can still play - coples is versitle and can slide inside. you take snaps away from the less productive player... who would be hardy in my opinion.

i'm not saying definitely draft him. if Mo is there then take him. my point is that coples and DE depth could be a value for the panthers. johnson is the only proven DE on the team.

You are contradicting yourself you know... On one hand you say we need to give Coples time (Like Johnson) while saying that Hardy needs to go because he has not produced enough in your mind in 2 years. Also moving him inside would be a bad idea because he plays with such high pad level. I mean are you going to ask Edwards or McClain to step aside so a Rookie can get more playing time. I dont think thats such a good idea.

Ive said many time before I dont watch college ball. I dont know what to expect with Coples. I just think that if youre picking at 9 . . and that pick is a BPA. . he should be starting. I will be disappointed otherwise. Theres plenty of other irrational fans on here saying ridiculous things and if Im being ridiculous then so be it. I want someone thats gonna help right now, not later.
