Also, I'd probably be a little hesitant to adopt one of the first few that come out.

iPad is a proven success, so you know that support/app development/etc will be strong.

I have complete confidence in MS to do well with this venture, but I'd still be hesitant to buy one of the first few on the market.

Portability and battery life are huge factors I think. Touch screen is just extra to that.

Honestly, if you arent particularly interested in the touch screen then just get a netbook. They give you more for the price than a tablet and have significantly better battery life/ portability than a normal laptop. Plus the full keyboard- I dont think I could do any serious word processing on a touch screen

I use mine for general media consumption. Video, music, gaming, web surfing. I'm a teacher so I also use my iPad in my classroom for my lectures.

For the most part, document editing is okay, but don't plan to use it for any hardcore document creation.

If you have a keyboard, it'll be better but a lot of the document editing software for tablets isn't that great.

I've had the iPad 2 for almost a year and love it. To answer your question, it does not replace a laptop. Once you start using it, you'll find there are some online functions (lol pr0n) that are just smoother/easier on a laptop, but about 90% of what I do online is just as easy on iPad. For schoolwork, editing resumes, writing Word docs...I'd recommend using a laptop still. It's tough to justify the purchase at first because most normal people don't have $600 laying around to spend on electronics or "toys," but I can attest it is worth every penny. I use it every day for hours a day; web browsing, watching Mad Men, playing World of Goo to pass the time, whatever.

As far as Apple or Android, of course I'll recommend Apple. Humongous app store, so smooth and easy to use, and when using Droid tabs I just feel like they're nice but not quite as slick as the iPad. I feel it's worth the extra hundred bucks or whatever to pay for Apple because this isn't a frequent purchase--just go all out. Even spring for the new one, what the heck. For a whole, at least, you'll have the latest and greatest. Hope this helps.

I own a Kindle Fire. It's not one of the big boys, but I can say that for the price it's an impressive mini-tablet, way more than just a reader. Great web browsing, music, movies, apps, all that.

From an education/business perspective though, I'd have to recommend the iPad.

I have a Kindle Fire, too, and I agree 100% (although I think the Silk browser sucks balls)

That, plus we basically bought a portal linked directly to Amazon's content (music, movies, books, etc), and the broswer does give me fits at times, but for $199, not a bad product at all. Even with the smaller screen, when I'm watching Netflix, once I get into the movie, I forget about the screen size. Really sharp graphics too.
