Why You Should Be Happy With Tolbert Signing

I know it is blasphamey around here but Smitty ain't worth a ton going forward. I realize on this board DeAngeo will pwn people in his mid 30s and Steve Smith will be snataching balls out of double couple at 40 per some.....

3 yr deal worth about 17.5 sounds about right. Reggie Wayne type money. Probably can afford to make it a little nicer deal....but not a huge difference.

Agreed 100%

Agreed 100%

but this is Carolina and after watching what they did w/ Williams. Nothing would shock me. Smitty has all the ingrediants in the making for Carolina to do something silly with an aging player.

If Smith puts up similar numbers to this year he will get a big contract. Smith won't get a huge signing bonus and some of it will be option bonuses going forward so if he drops off or we release him so the hit won't be great, but he will get a big contract with most of it salary which he may not see. Remember Haynesworth got a 100 million dollar deal that turned out to be worth less than 40 million in reality. So expect Smith to get a 3 or 4 year deal year 30 or 40 million deal (10 million a year) with roughly 16-20 million of it guaranteed. It may be 10 million up front and 6 guaranteed his second year of his salary Smith may see only 25 million of it but you have to stroke his ego. Anyone who knows him, knows that.

Deals done after 2013 are going to be going way up as the cap expands.

yeah, that sounds like a Carolina Panther deal. Reggie Wayne gets a 3 yr 17.5 deal....Smitty gets a 3 yr 40 deal. Welcome to Carolina!

Wayne is in a receiver friendly WCO and is averaging 12 yards a catch over the past 3 years. And he had Peyton Manning throwing to him 2 of the 3. Meanwhile Smith has averaged 15 yards a carry in a vertical passing offense with two rookies and a backup quarterback throwing to him. Wayne can be replaced easier than Smith who is still a game changer.

You get what the market bears. Who will pay big bucks for Wayne? Who will pay big bucks for Steve Smith?? Do you think they are the same??

I notice we now have four above average running backs, and we will probably use three of them every game. We all know how the Saints use four running backs and usually have a successful running attack.

the last game of the season Ron Rivera was talking about how he wanted a Scat back like Sproles. We just signed Tolbert who can run, block, catch, and play special teams. I know he isn't a super fast player but would he be considered a Scat back?

Anyhow is it just me or are we trying to be more like the saints?

And also I believe that we have really improved our special teams this off season which was our weakness last season. I believe we would have been a playoff team if we had decent production on our special teams. If our core of young guys can improve and grow into their potential and the guys on the IR return back to 100% our team should be a playoff contender this upcoming season. I can't wait to see what we do in the draft next month.

and when both Wayne and Smith had bums throwing to them as their teams earned the #1 overall....Wayne was twice as productive.

I think Carolina could pay big bucks to Smith who will be 33 this season. Carolina has a habit of throwing cash around to players that have been in a Panther uniform.

Do I think a lot of teams are going to give a 33 yr old problem child WR a big contract......hell no. All it takes is one idiot so ou never no. But most teams don't pay big bucks to aging players.

I am not really happy or pissed about this move. If we retain Stewart I'm neutral about it as Tolbert is a ST ace and gives a new wrinkle on O with him at FB but I still think Stewart gets traded and then it would be an excellent pickup. Cap space is limited so this move only makes sense if he does.
