Luke Kuechly Visiting Carolina

The 1st round is muy different then Top 10

top 10, top 15, top 20. When you are the best at your position there really isn't a big difference. What usually happens at some positions is you get a huge drop off between the best DT in the draft and the 5th DT in the draft both of which could be in the first round. But whether you take Von Miller at 4th or Willis at 11th they were the best in the class. That is true of Kuechly as well.

If you only get 1 pick in the first round and he will be gone before you pick again, trade down only if you don't mind losing him. Otherwise you pull the trigger and you are glad you got him. If he turns out to be as talented as Dan Morgan, Or Patrick Willis or Von Miller, you don't care if it was top 5, top 10, or top 20. If you get Curry, you would be unhappy if it was in the second round.

Ignore the Aaron Curry red herring. Panthro is just fishing and stirring up the pot. Instead of bringing up the studs at linebacker who have gone in the first round and won the Butkus award, we are bringing up the lone bust. Kind of like pointing out how Jamarcus Russell was a can't miss quarterback coming out of college when we discussed Newton last year. It doesn't matter how good Curry was or wasn't coming out of college. It has nothing to do with Kuechly and his chances to succeed just like Von Miller and Kueckly are different as well.

There are a lot of complete-game footages of this guy floating around, and they show a lot of missed tackles and a lot of him hitting the wrong gap or getting blown up out of a play. I just don't want him at 9.

I watched 4 complete games (where it's edited to just show his plays) and I didn't notice him make 1 solo tackle that wasn't a desperation shoe-string tackle where he had almost missed.

He is usually near the ball a lot and is almost always involved in the play, but he never really made the play.

you forgot Aldon smith, Clay Matthews, Ryan Kerrigan, and Jon Beason. I'm not even going into 2005, I don't even remember the 05 draft.

How many of those guys were busts in the past 5 years?? Lauranitis and Puz are not busts either. I count one, the same guy you won't shut up about. I'm not saying he will be a superstar but to put him with Curry is just ridiculous

I wonder if signing Garay and drafting Luke would be better than getting a DT. Lord knows whichever DT we draft won't be ready any time soon. There's no Kris Jenkins in this draft.

Of course, I'm always hoping for Claiborne.

kris jenkins, was a 3rd rounder due to lack of fitness, and effort.

I really wish people would stop saying stupid poo.

Exactly, the guy RACKS up tackles more than he actually MAKES plays. (Tackles behind line of scrimmage, stopping runners when they hit the hole, etc). He is a good linebacker but not a playmaker. Not worth a top ten pick.

Just the opposite teams gameplanned to avoid him. He was the only good player on the team. He had to run sideline to sideline to make tackles. He also was an outside backer his freshmen year and was second in tackles in the country. He can run with wide receivers as well as TEs and running backs. He is as fast as Davis and quicker than Beason. He didn't pass rush, they played a zone coverage and he played in the secondary. With 4.5 speed and 27 reps in the bench press he is plenty strong to shed tacklers and rush the passer.

And you are misinformed if you think he goes 20-25. Some drafts having him going to KC at 11 and he doesn't get past Philly at 15 if he makes that far. Did Dan Connor win the Butkus Award for best linebacker in college and come in second as a sophomore to Von Miller ?? Comparing the two shows how little you know about him.

Dan Connor won the Bednarik award. Pretty good..Past winners include Suh, Peterson, Peppers, Dan Morgan, Lavar Arrington. Dan Connor was considered THE BEST linebacker in the country by some publications so please don't act like the guy was a bum coming out of college. I think Keuchly is a good player and is more but his stats tell a big story...he didn't rush the passer in college at all (which I think in order to be a complete linebacker you need to be able to do that) and he didn't take the ball away from the othe team. I'm a State fan, I know how good Keuchly is but he's not worth a top 10 pick. If he goes in the top 20 then that's fine because teams are going to draft based somewhat on need.

Keuchly is probably a little more Brian Cushing than Dan Connor BUT that doens't mean he couldn't fall. That's all I'm saying.

3 guys you listed were DEs in college, and still number 1 priority is getting after the QB in a 3-4.bad example to compare a guy that does not get after the QB to guys who are coverage LBs. and his coverage skills are not world beating the Clemson game they kept attacking the middle of the field.

So you watched 4 complete games and all he did was make desperation tackles and not 1 solo tackle. Hard to believe in the other 8 games he was able to amass 102 solo tackles and 89 assists for a total of 191. Which games did you watch? I just saw the game breakdown and the least number of solo tackles he had in a game was 1 against Massacusetts with 10 assists. Here is the breakout for his junior year:

http://www.cfbstats.com/2011/player/67/1023273/tackle/gamelog.html

Here is Patrick Willlis's game stats from his senior year for comparison:

Glad you could give us those personal observations to counter those obviously incorrect stats and facts. Otherwise we might go astray and think he was pretty good.

Dan Connor was the best linebacker in college??? Remind me again why he wasn't taken until the third round and why we don't use him as a three down back?? Something about not being good against the pass. Unlike Kuechly who is described as very good in coverage and able to cover TEs, runningbacks and even wide receivers as the article stated at the beginning of the thread.

The thing you and others forget is that Kuechly was only a junior in college. Many linebackers have their breakout season their senior years and often don't even get on the field until they are a junior. Kuechly was so good as a junior he felt their was no reason to even stay his senior year. He is still growing and getting stronger and more athletic. He is like Charles Johnson was out of college- still learning and getting better. He will go in the top 20 as a junior.
