Who cares what Stewart's getting paid this year? He's going to end up either A) Walking away for nothing or B) signed to a ridiculous contract that further hurts our cap situation. Without knowing the specifics of the deals this team has two options:

1) Trade Stewart - Shouldn't be in this position in the first place if Hurney had any foresight whatsoever. Stew is the best RB on the team and b/c of the Williams deal he is most likely not going to be a Panther either before or after the 2012 season.

2) Keep them both for this year, sign Stewart in the offseason, and release Deangelo after the 2012 season. The part that sucks about this is that Deangelo's contract will most likely hurt the cap if he's released.

3) Keep Stewart this year and let him walk after 2012: It'll be nice to get one more season out of the Dwill/Stewart combo but it's going to come at a price of getting nothing for a low-yardage RB worth at least a 2nd round pick right now.

The thing that we can't do is sign both. Its too much money if Stewart wants to get paid his market value. So for the long-term success of the team I don't get why you don't trade one of them now especially since we just signed Mike Tolbert who was an extremely capable RB for the Chargers last year. He could easily fill the secondary RB role.

You act like it is your money they are spending. I think the Tolbert signing shows that Hurney has it under control and knows how to find good players for a reasonable amount. If Stewart wants to be here, he will find the money to sign him. If Stewart doesn't then I suspect he will try and trade him. I think he doesn't want another Pepper's issue and getting Tolbert just gave us leverage with Stewart. If he doesn't want to sign then we can trade him and still have a decent backfield. Even if Stewart wants out we will have to agree or we can franchise tag him next year.

You should be happy with the Tolbert signing because this just gave us more control over what happens with Stewart.

I'm glad D'Will weighed in. Interesting that Stewart has not and most of the speculation is about him being traded.

Well Williams is untradeable....and just got paid.

Stewart was looking for an updated version of Williams contract next year....odds werent in his favor of getting that here before the signing....less likely now.

Stewart walks IMO. No point in addressing it now. Injuries can always change how the future turns out. If you are Stewart I think you continue as is. Carolina is better served at this point keeping him than trading him ( that is if you believe a RB will only get you a 3rd or late 2nd)

How much of Williams contract will count towards the salary cap next year, and can it be restructured as to allow us to make a good offer to Stewart? I think these are the key points in determining whether Stewart will be a panther after this season.

Don't forget Cam. If he has a good year Carolina will be trying to give him a new deal as well.....letting Cam get to the end of his short contract potentially could be full retard money.

If Cam gets extended we don't have to pay him more on his current contract so the cap hit would stay the same, we just give him a boatlaod of up front money which I think doesn't boost the cap until the new contract kicks in but I could be wrong about that. But I doubt we do that until 2014 which is the third year of the contract. We will have a lot more money to play with at that point. Really 2013 is thhe only year wheere things will be tight. If we keep Stewart's salary to next to nothing next year and make some of the guaranteed money a signing bonus and the rest options bonuses from 2014 on, we ought to be able to swing a deal if Stewart wants it.
