Supply And Demand

A bonus is paid up front and then counts along the cap for the duration of the original contract length right? No matter what, youre paying the bonus, its already paid and its going to count on the cap. First tell me if that is correct I guess.

. . damn have to go dog got out. .

Im moving towards this thought: The contract outside of the guaranteed money can be re-negotiated whenever. If you want to set the market value and do something good for your player and team, you pay him a big bonus up front and tell him something like "look I want to restructure this when it comes time to pay Stew also but for now here's the bonus since you earned it". Now the rest of the teams have to pay there backs at that market value that you set.

So if I get your train of thought you want Williams to essentially tear up his contract like Davis did and while the signing bonus would continue, he would take less salary moving forward. Not really like a normal restructure where you pay some of the salary up front which increases the guaranteed money and cap hit in subsequent years on top of the salary you pay, but want him to do what happens when a player gets injured seriously or his production drops off like it did with Wharton and you give him the choice to either take less or you will release him.

Is that what you are talking about?

If so, why would Williams be interested after putting up 5.4 yards an attempt last year and knowing if we did cut him next year that Fox or someone else would pay him quite a bit more than that. Because he likes the Panthers and Stewart and wants to take less money than Stewart is getting??

Remember if he takes a salary cut, he makes that much less. While the cap hit continues over a 5 year contract, his upfront money was paid out when he signed it so that 22 million guaranteed has been paid after this year. Why take a cut in 2013 if your production remains the same when you can go elsewhere and make another guaranteed signing bonus and get paid by someone else. Davis did it because he had to after 3 surgeries. No one else does it unless you convert some salary into a bonus which gets paid upfront and you guarantee some of the remaining salary. Otherwise you say no, wait for them to release you and sign elsewhere for another signing bonus and salary. You think his ego wouldn't be a factor when he knows that the Panthers could pay both of them if they want to in 2013 and that in 2014 the cap is going up by 30 million????

His salary is already going down next year to account for Stewart.

Because D'Lo wont be able to stay healthy if he tries to shoulder the load himself and he knows that. So, I would think it in his best interests to play with another back like Stew. D'Lo would be extending his career and making good money. . . hopefully get a ring. At 30 the wheels dont fall off but it gets harder to stay healthy. Take a pay cut for Stew and he may very well end up making more over the course of a fruitful career.

I get the latter part of what you said and of course Im biased and WANT to come up with some reason of how this could come to be possible. So youre saying that we are going to have plenty of cap space by the time Stew needs to be re-signed?

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
