Source: Rb Mike Tolbert Visiting Carolina Panthers This Weekend

I think Tolbert is a good back, but I don't think that he's better than D Will or Stew. I like Goodson also but not as a RB cause of his fumbling issues. I've read a lot of negativity bout D Will and don't get it. D Will have had the least amount of fumbles than all of the discussed RB's and better production. Stew did have a better year last year but compare the stats....they are both productive when used correctly and I'd like to keep them both.

Williams has been great.

But he is 29 and doesn't fit as well in a passing offense. That doesn't mean currently he isn't good....his window is short and this scheme plays against him. In this offense....there isn't a much of a gap between a Tolbert and Williams. Williams is a clear better runner but one who can't stay on the field as much

True, true...I can see that. I was excited when D Will was resigned, although I was surprised at the amount of the contract. Then after the season kicked off, I was confused as to why we wasn't using him as much. Stew is a much better pass catching RB than D Will. I jus look at fumbles more when it comes to the RB position.

Williams doesn't fit as well in a passing offense? Based on what? Stewart had more catches last year and all of a sudden Williams doesn't fit in? Stewart averaged 8.8 yards a carry and Williams averaged 8.4. If we had been deciding who was a better receiver until last season it would have been Williams. Stewart had a better season catching the ball and he got the lion's share of the opportunities. If he does that again this season then it might be true. But we all know that one season doesn't mean that much.

Then you go on to say his window is short with no evidence of that and this scheme plays against him yet the second half of the season when Chud finally figured out how to use him, he had some great games. I figure that it was a case of the scheme being adapted to make good use of him more than he doesn't fit in. If nothing else, Chud has shown that he will change the scheme to adapt to the players rather than expect them to fit the scheme.+

Finally you go to say that there isn't a gap between Tolbert and Williams???? They aren't anything alike. If anything ,Stewart and Tolbert are more interchangeable based on their style of running.

I know you have an agenda here, but if you stretch things any further you are going to pull something.

At this point Hurney has made his bed with Williams. If we are content in going with one of the two it will be Williams. He COULD elevate himself back to being a great back with the right opportunities. People will point out that he is 29...but he is Thomas Jones 29, not Emmitt Smith 29. What I mean by that is he has probably carried the ball half as much as the other 29 year old starters in the league so he's got a good 5 years left in the tank if we continue to use a RB by committee. Nobody is going to be as good with him as Stewart but if Stewart is going to bag a high 2nd round pick that we can use for our defense (assuming Hurney doesn't blow his load all over the pick) then it could be worth it to make a deal and sign Tolbert to fill the short yardage back role.

I'm not saying its the path I would have chosen but its the only option we have b/c we aren't going to be able to keep both. Stewart is going to want/and deserves a contract equal to Deangelo's contract. Hurney put himself in this position last year by paying 40 million bucks to a RB with a capable backup. Not to mention the value of RBs in our system was even more downgraded when we drafted Cam and installed Chud's offense.

I don't expect Stewart to be a Panther next year....just a gut feeling.

It's funny reading the posters trashing Williams like they know what they are talking about. Williams and Stewart are basically identical. We just don't use our RBs solely for running as much as we used to anymore. Williams hasn't lost anything.

I haven't seen any drop off in Williams. Hes still an awesome back, Just less carries is all.

Yeah, he doesn't fit as well in a passing offense. That is why Chud gave Stewart the most time on the field. Williams is weak in pass protection.

He is 29...RBs don't play often much longer. Give a thousand reasons why Williams will be an exception to that I'd you want...

And no Williams and Tolbert aren't a like...that is why in this scheme were pass protection, receiving, and running between the tackles narrows the gap between the 2.

That is just reality

Chud didn't think they were identical. Scheme matters. Saying Williams doesn't fit as well isn't exactly bashing him.

Time to cut/trade Deangelo

Not sure if serious, but that isn't happening. His cap hit would be 17 million for this season if he's traded.12 million in bonuses and 5 million in guaranteed salary. Next season that hit would be 9 million. It cost twice as much to cut him or trade him this season, and roughly the same next season. If a RB was traded it would be Stewart and there isn't any way around that. With the team wanting to resign Stewart, unless he wants to leave the Panthers will have two RB's with 4-5 year deals worth in the 45-50 million range."Or a 100 million dollar backfield."

It's going to be hard to trade him. Cutting him makes little sense unless we have big plans in FA.

It's nearly impossible, unless he restructured.
