Panthers are the Best in 1st Round Picks

In the Fox/Hurney era (since 2002). I did a little research and looked at all other 31 teams' first round picks since 2002. The Panthers are the ONLY team to have a first round pick from EVERY year 2002 through 2008 be on their roster and be a full time starter. Yes Jonathon Stewart is not, but Jeff Otah is, and he was a first round pick.

Pittsburgh is the closest still having every 1st rounder since 2002 still on the roster but their 2007 pick (Lawrence Timmons 2 starts/16 games played) and 2008 pick (Rashard Mendenhall 1/4) are not full time starters.

Colts are the next best. Colts didn't have a pick in 2004, and 2007 pick (Anthony Gonzalez 2 starts/16 games played) wasn't a full time starter in 2008.

Then Dallas. They didn't have a first rounder in 2004, and their 2006 pick (Bobby Carpenter 0 games started/3 games played), 2007 pick (Anthony Spencer 0/12) 2008 picks (Mike Jenkins 3/14, Felix Jones 0/6) aren't full time starters.

Then the Bucs. They didn't select a first rounder in 2002 and 2003. Their 2004 pick (Michael Clayton 9 starts/15 games played), 2005 pick (Cadillac Williams 1/6) and 2008 pick (Aqib Talib 2/15) weren't full time starters in 2008

Most every other team doesn't have all those picks still on their roster.

So Fox/Hurney arguably have been the best in the biz in first round picks. If you argue that a first round pick should be a starter. It could be argued that if a team is good enough, no first round pick would be able to start for them. But the Panthers lowest first round picks (Beason 25, Deangelo 27) are two of their best 1st round picks.

Now 2nd through 7th is a different story and there they have a lot of room for improvement. So unfortunately that does not bode too well for the 2009 draft.

Rounds 2-7 are tough. It's more of a crap shoot the deeper ya get into it. But, we already know our #1 pick for this year is a keeper and has a year in the NFL under his belt.

We turned over college scouting personnel in 2006 so the last couple of drafts are markedly different than the 2005 draft which was awful for example. If you look at 2007 and 2008 a majority of those players through the first several rounds are all starters or contributors. We seem to be getting better at later round picks.

Yes the Fact that we have Peppers, Jordan, Gamble, Davis, Williams, Beason, Stewart and Otah starting or getting valuable minutes is quite impressive. Most other teams would be very content with that.

I agree completely with this. Since the new regime we have done wonders in the draft.

2nd Round R. Kalil Beginning of a solid Career started 08

3rd Round C. Johnson Really has the talent and has what it takes to step up in 09

4th Round R. Robinson Injured in 08 but should resume role as KR/PR in 08

5th Round D. Rosario Needs to continue on promising start.

5th Round T. Shaw odd man out in a deep Linebacking Corp

7th Round C. J. Wilson expect to move into Nickel spot.

2008 We have everyone we drafted and most should contribute.

3rd Round Godfrey Starting

3rd Round Dan Conner (returning from injury should contribute)

5th Round G. Barnidge Saw PT last season should see more this year.

6th Round N. Hayden got valuable PT late last season should help with little depth at DT

7th Round H. Taylor Productive PT could easily take Peps spot or at least be in rotation

7th Round G. Schwartz will be relied to fill the void in the depth for the OL

7th Round M. Bernadeau with Hangman gone he could be back up center.

Very impressive that all 4 - 7th rounders are still with us. Show solid picks. in 07 and 08.

Couple more years of this and we will have a very solid team and win the Super Bowl. You build through the draft. Counting 1st Rounders we have 16 of our last 17 picks still on our roster.

I think our whole scouting dept deserves a raise. If you can hit on just half your picks constantly you will be a playoff contender almost every year.
