If Not Jake?

Recommended Posts

I hear everyday how 50% of you hate Jake. Think that he is washed up. Done for. All because of one game. Some of you even contend it was a bad season for Jake. Cause we won a few of thoses games by luck. "if it weren't for S. Smith we would be _-_ (u fill in the blank) instead of 12-4" "Jake got lucky, he flung it up there and by the grace of god Steve caught it"

Whatever your reason is, I don't truly care. Now to my question.

If not Jake who? Gonna trade for Cutler? Bring in another loose cannon like K. Collins? Package a deal together for Brady Quinn? Hell Vince Young or Matt Liehart might be available for the right price. Or maybe we could package our 2010 thru 2012 1st round picks and Peppers for T. Brady. Culpepper might be had. Hell maybe NYG will take Peppers off our hands and we can bring back David Carr. Garcia is ava.....never mind that is stooping too low. Would never take TB garbage anyhow.

Our best options are on the team already. Josh McCown has been on our F.O. radar screen for years. He has been with us a year and now will have the whole preseason to settle into #2. Matt Moore, another highly targeted, player our F.O. had on their minds. IF JAKE FALTERS, things will be OK.

God forbid he doesn't overcome that loss but if he doesn't we have our QB's for the future. Just as good if not better than any of the Talent in this years draft or Free Agent Market.

I don't think Jake has our coaching staff so blinded that regardless of his talent he is our QB. Jake still has the ability to lead us and the F.O. thinks so too. Will he be around to 2014. Don't think so.

For the Fans that still believe in Jake. Let's watch him closely and see what 2009 brings us. For the FANS that think he is god. Those days are gone. Those of you that think he is garbage. Get a grip, he isn't that bad. But if you do... Who do YOU place him with?

Go Panthers

People are in "sticker shock" over this Delhomme deal - but at the end of the day it was a cap move. Details haven't been released yet, but I'd suspect most of the 45 mil is on the back end of the contract. I don't think the Panthers expect Jake to be the starter for 5 more years, but the length of the contract is so the money can be spread out.

Jake already had a fat contract and was taking up 11 mil in cap this year. The Panthers had to come up with a number that Jake and his agent would agree to, otherwise Jake would just sit on what he's got and then he could have really held this organization ransom next year (with no cap). Moore has shown some good stuff and some bad stuff - but he's still very raw. McCown is here for damage control. In the bigger picture, this was a good move for this franchise.

Matt Moore is our next starter.
i still agree with this, though i do not mind at all taking advantage of the pool of QBs coming out next year. still....i like the idea of moore being the next in line.
even with the new deal jake has? i rem hurney saying jake has a young arm..to me that means he will be playing here to he is..like 36-37 that would make moore 28-29..thats a lil old for a first time starter.
i would say, yes, even with the deal that jake got. here is the thing. jake wants to retire a starter. does that mean he has to be the starter when he retires? how much would it mean to have a backup QB intimately familiar with the team and the offense with all the experience jake has. jake could still start for the next year...maybe two and then be benched but still remain as our primary backup.

IRONY...

Criticizing a cap-strapped team for signing their starting QB to an extension because you don't understand how the salary cap works.

Okay, that's not really ironic - it's just pathetic.

Post in other thread...

Okay, let me try and explain this to you....if 20 mil of the 42.5 is guaranteed, that means it is essentially a signing bonus and does not count towards the cap, so 42.5 - 20 = 22.5 over 5 years as far as the cap is concerned. 22.5/5 = 4.5 million a year vs. 11 million a year. That means we gave Jake a contract he would accept which allowed us to free up 6.5 mil in cap space.

So yes, 20 mil is a cap move.
