to the disgruntled Panther fans

The Panthers are not making any large FA signings. Let me try and explain a couple of reasons why for those of you who think the sky is falling.

A. Spending large amounts in FA is a recipe for disaster. On the positive side, you are getting a player who has proven himself in the NFL, but, you are also paying much more for a player who is most likely reaching the middle/end of their career and competing with other NFL for high caliber FA’s will no doubt drive the price up. With certain franchises willing to drastically overpay for the top talent, it is a better strategy to allow those teams to max their spending limits early and find talent that might be overlooked.

B. Our team is relatively young. If you think about the positions we would be targeting in FA, we also have young talented players already in the mix at most of those positions. Why would we bring in an older veteran player to compete with the youth we have already established. Especially when you consider that our couching staff is entering their second year and did not have a full offseason to work with the young players. I expect big improvement out of Fua, Bell, Hogan, Kearse, Keiser, McClain, Stanford and numerous other 2nd year players who will have a full offseason of weight training, conditioning, and learning the system

C. It is hard to bring in a veteran player at a position where we have players coming off injuries. If we brought in a veteran replacement and the injured player recovers fully from his ailment, we have wasted cap space. Don’t forget that we finished the season with 18 players on IR. The most notable being Beason, Davis, Edwards, Gettis, Otah, Goodson, and numerous others.

TLDR: We are not entering the FA bidding market because: FA’s cost more than they are worth due to overspending franchises, our team is young and entering their 2nd year under a new coaching staff with no offseason training last year, we have 18 players coming off injury who need to be evaluated.

Wait as long as you like but S Martin Godfrey,Clausen and others are still going to be bad.Time does not cure all.

If we shorten the season to 1 game I agree we should feel excited about Otah and T Davis returning.

Bringing in the so called overated FAs may have to do with us running out of cap space.Do you really think if we had mucho cap space that we would not call Mario Williams?

Dont believe all this organic growth BS ...we are broke this year.

Have a great Day!

I expect Otah to have a very good year, if for no other reason than it is the last year on his contract and if he expects to get another contract, he had better perform his oft injured butt off.

But, I agree and have consistantly said, if we were to bring in a FA, why not a Safety. That is the one position I believe we will address in the draft earlier than most people think.

forget spending large amounts and getting into bidding wars on the few top FAs. how bout just a couple solid starting caliber players at cheap/reasonable deals.

it seems like this team is either busy massively paying their own players or scraping the bottom of the barrel for guys that nobody else wants for the bare minimum. there's almost no middle ground, and generally that's where the best value is at.

right now we need to fill/upgrade 5-6 starter positions and add depth at multiple positions as well. if we wait until the draft and cuts to address everything the chances of us putting together a playoff run is damn near zero.

I expect Otah to have a great year, since he is in his contract year. If he performs up to his potential, does he get a big money contract, or would you still be weary about inujuries?

When have the Panthers ever made a huge splash in FA? Especially at the beginning of FA... ???

I'm happy with the way they run it... pretty much got to let the upper tier FA's get signed and get that out of the way... which is what they are doing. If there was someone they really wanted, they'd be after him... I'm not worried and this doesn't mean we won't put together a playoff run...

It would be nice to have been the Bengals. Made the playoffs and had 40 mill to spend in FA. Hopes would be high. Course they will probably go into the season still having 35 mill to spend

They have done a pretty good job. Most of the teams that are big spenders are the ones the owners run versus the GMs.There are extremes in relying only on the draft and overspending.
