Saints add OG Ben Grubbs

Recommended Posts

It may assist Brees signing if anything. I doubt he would want to come back to a line with a big drop in guard play. It could show there committed to protecting him and keeping the team competitive.

Regardless they would not sign Grubbs if they thought it could risk losing Brees.

i really don't think it was about the Oline as much as it was the proper respect and $$ he feels the saints owe him for the next 5-7 years of his career. he built that team and city back and now they are trying to lowball him and then they showed a total lack of respect and did the one thing that he hates the most...tagged him. he's right for not wanting that thing on him considering the risk last time.

Exactly. I heard a blurb yesterday where he was saying the last time he played under the tag was the year he hurt hurt his shoulder and it almost ended his career.

Not too hard to understand his position. And yes, Grubbs was a good signing for them.

This guy must be even more anoying to saints fans to spend all of his time here. I also wouldn't be bragging about downgrading at a guard spot and still paying out a big contract. If we let stewart walk next year and give out a 5 year 30 million deal with 12 guaranteed to cedric benson, I will not go to other teams boards to talk mess.

Putting the tag on Brees wasn't a total lack of respect, they ran out of time and needed to tag him to keep him off the market. They are still working on finalizing the deal and have all the way until July to get it done. The amount of contract is correct, the hold up is Brees wants the contract to be front loaded. The contract offered to Brees averages 18 per year but Brees wants the first 3 years to be at 23 mil and last two at 11.5, but the total amount is correct.

Even with limited cap space they can still pull this off because the first year will have big cap discounts as per cap rules on resigning veteran players. The next two years won't have those cap discounts but the cap is also set to increase a lot next year for all teams.

There is a huge difference between 23 mil in the first 3 years and what the Saints have offered. Brees knows that the tail end of the contract is meaningless either because of re-negotiation or retirement, so he wants his money now, and that is not unreasonable given what he has done for that franchise.

Oh, and the big cap increase will come in 2014, not next year.

first, when a guy who has bad experiences with the tag says, "whatever you do, don't tag me" and you do it anyway, it's a lack of respect for him. i don't care how you sugarcoat it. it makes any discussion with him that much harder.

also...this "big cap discounts as per cap rules on resigning veteran players."? big? they have a total of $1.5mil credit that will go against a later year (presumably the next year) that is allowed to be split among a teams 3 highest paid players...only $500k each. that isn't going to go very far.

there is no huge discount for vet players.

btw...it's only for the 2012 season.

I don't think the oLine was heavily involved. But the prospect of a gaping hole at guard certainly wouldn't have helped.

If reports were true, they offered a contract that would have made him the highest paid Qb and he rejected the offer.

Maybe there we're specifics that he didn't like, but I don't see how he could think the money itself was a low ball and wasn't good enough.

If a future HOF and best player in the history of your franchise is a FA then there is no precaution you shouldn't take. With the stakes that high you shouldn't rule out options just so you can be kind.

The tag was not meant for him to sign, it was meant as a means to get the contract both sides wanted done.
