I dont see the Hurney magic

Am I the only one that thinks one of Hurney's faults is NOT letting some of our guys walk?

I mean I love Davis as a player, but let's face it, he should have NEVER gotten the contract that he did when coming off of 2 ACL tears.

Same with Deangelo, love him as a player, but runningbacks are a dime a dozen, and Stewart was waiting in the wings. We should have franchised him for a season and let him walk this year.

Dragging the whole Peppers thing out I sort of understood, but the reality is that we still ended up letting him walk after he was kicking and screaming to leave, and all we got was a 3rd round Comp. Pick for him that we spent on Sione Fua.

And no I still won't forgive keeping Dan Morgan over Will Witherspoon. The writing was on the wall for Dan, and yet we offered him a contract big enough that we couldn't keep Spoon as well. Stupid move.

I know Hurney wants to build our "core", but sometimes I fear that he really can't pick out who the "core" players are or should be.

In restructuring Gross and Davis, and cutting Wharton we are at the cap number now. This is why you don't hand out star contracts to your #2 runningback and a LB who hasn't played in 2 years. If we don't get to the playoffs, Hurney is toast

Actually the Wharton cutting won't affect the cap until June 1, so we are under the cap now without that 5.7 million being added in. That will give us room down the road to pick up guys once cuts start being made. But we still have guys who can be restructured or extended to gain more cap space. I know little about it but we can save another 4 million by converting Godfrey's option bonus into a signing bonus. We could extend Smith and save another 4-5 million this year. So by my calculations we could be another 8-million under if we chose to exercise those deals which could grow to 13-14 million once June 2nd comes around.

The first game isn't until September so there is plenty of time to play this out. And for those thinking that all the good ones are going to be gone in a week or two. There are literally hundreds of free agents on the market today with another hundred being cut once the 200 guys who are drafted get factored in. As times goes on and players fear not playing at all this year, prices will plummet using the old supply and demand theory of business.

As for Davis, since when was star money 700,000 for a linebacker. That looks like vet minimum to me.

I look at these teams overpaying just to get that big name in the first few hours of FA as desperation moves, often made by desperate franchises.

I for one am comfortable that our FO does not handle business out of desperation.

people that buy early in FA overpay in FA.

sorry, but carl nicks isn't worth $10mil a year.

VJax isn't worth the money that he got paid, esp. when he's going to be part of an offense that won't be throwing the ball much.

also, remember: teams that are the big winners in FA are rarely, if ever, winners when it matters.

guityerbitchin.

exactly, the redskins sign tons of free agents every year, they continue to suck every year. Build through the draft, sign free agents to fill holes.

Bingo. See, if only the draft happened BEFORE free agency began, it would make more sense to everyone.

just because the Redskins are terrible in free agency doesn't mean it's completely worthless and should be overlooked. plenty of teams around the league make smart free agent pickups and improve their team.

49ers last year got carlos rodgers for barely over 2 million and he had a pro bowl year. they also signed aikers for less than what we gave olindo mare and he had a pro bowl year too. pretty sure those moves helped them.

the better teams around the league draft well AND do well in free agency. if we're going against them solely with draft picks then we're automatically at an inherit disadvantage.

it's obvious you don't understand the context in some of the issues you raised...

Yep, Redskins represent the extreme opposite....which isn't good. But there are examples of more aggreesive teams in FA where it clearly pays off. Carolina needs to kick it up a notch....and that doesn't mean be the Redskins

no one is saying to completely avoid FA.

just be smart with it...and signing big names in the first day or two of FA isn't really being smart with it. you can pick up a couple good players, but you will be overpaying for them.

you can still get very talented players waiting till the market levels out.
