Delhomme has new deal

So he's still going to be here for about 3 seasons?

Exactly, What this signing says the most is they have no faith in Moore or McCown to be starters.

Jakes Guarentee is what is going to hurt the most even if he gets cut after next season that money will still be on the books. Im still waiting to see how much cap space he saved this year.

Like someone said just a few posts back, Marty Hurney has struck out wildly in the past. It's a lame argument to say that we shouldn't voice our concerns with what the team's doing just because we don't work in the FO.

I have no problem with voicing opinion, but when you're ignorant of key details and facts it just makes you look bad.

 typical answer.

that's not my job, and no answer i could give you will satisfy you. Especially when people grossly augment Delhomme's ability in the first place, then people are going to argue that a person arguably better "wouldn't be a good fit".

I guess our best option is a QB who fugs up in playoff games.

In other words you CAN'T give a better plan or name a better QB we could have actually had instead of making this move. I am not promoting Jake's ability as a 'great' QB, just better than anyone out there available and/or one we could have had even if we did have something, someone, or the money with which to make a trade or move.

We have two on the team that could take over for Jake so those two count.

Ok, Easy, first of all you asked why this wasn't a good idea and i gave you plenty of valid reasons why. ...then you just seemed to ignore it and asked me that I couldn't give a better option when you didn't even ask that in the first place.

The Panthers should have let him play out the year to see if Arizona was truly an aberration or a sign of things to come. They just put all their eggs in his basket, and if he gets even worse, and games like Arizona, Oakland, and TB 1 last year come more often, now instead of having a QB we could just let loose, he's tied into our cap. If we realize the Delhomme era is finished, that it can't possibly continue we still have to pay him when we could've set him free, and if he worked out, we could give him a short extension.

This is just bad business dealing on Hurney's part. One of the most impulsive decisions he's ever made.

I'm collecting an archive of threads from this offseason and I can't wait to post excerpts from them after we go 6-10 next season and Jake has his worst year ever.

Some of you people will have to leave the Huddle permanently in shame.

Gosh, I hope that plan backfires and I'm the one to bump this thread for your benefit. sad little troll

And out come the Emo Panther Fans...

Pretty much.

You could have plugged David Carr in and we would have finished 11-5 with the amount of MVP candidates, Pro Bowlers, and superstars we had on offense.

Wow :nonod:

As a side note, apparently "joke journalist" Gantt was right

I will not spend another dollar on this sorry team and I am taking as many with me as I can. Obviously, my little $500 a year I spend won't even touch the franchise, but it's a start. If the fans continue to support this team financially, they will continue to make crap decisions. Anyone who thinks this is a smart move is an idiot; PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Best of luck Panthers. I've supported you from day 1, but my days are over. I would say see you in the playoff's, but you won't be there.

Apparently the drama queens are out too

Just accept it guys, Jake is going nowhere. He's our starter for the next 5 years. After that we'll probably extend him for another 5 years. We'll get him out on the field in one of those old person scooter things if we have to. He got us to the superbowl in 2003 and he'll get us there again! We're not giving up on you Jake!

You're enjoying this entirely too much

All they have to do is double Smitty and stack the box. And with our upcoming schedule, there are teams we will play that can pull that off successfully. Hard to be optimistic.

When have you tried?

How exactly do you double Smith and stack the box? Let Muhammad run free and pray he doesn't catch it?

The city doesn't matter. The lockerroom does....period.

Exactly.

But it always comes back to one question. Who are you going to get, at a price the Panthers are willing to pay, that is better than Jake? An unproven rookie that will want big bucks or a veteran of 5 years or so who is no better and doesn't know the system? This was the right move for now.

Also exactly.

Talk to Jeff Garcia and promise him a legit chance to compete with Josh McCown for the starting job with Carolina for the upcoming season. With how it went down in Tampa, he probably would have relished the opportunity to come back and play well against them. He hasn't had a passer rating below 90.0 in the past three years and has 35 TDs and 12 picks in that time frame while getting limited starts in some of those. If you can get a solid commit from Jeff Garcia, then cut Jake Delhomme and get his name off the books.

Use one of your 1st picks of the NFL draft to select your quarterback of the future and have him learn under Garcia and groom him for a season or two until he's ready to take over the squad.

And don't assume this situation above was impossible to pull off. Even if you didn't get Garcia there were other guys out there that are starting material and have just as much to offer as Delhomme.

Garcia? Seriously?

Besides the fact that he's pushing 40 (and you want him to start for a season or two) have you ever watched him in a non-West Coast offense?

Good lord

(and for the record, Garcia signed with the Raiders. He's now a backup to JaMarcus Russell)

Like who? Grossman? Frerotte? Losman? Guys who, by the way, don't know our system?

Sheesh

I'm a McCown and Moore fan, but please :nonod:

At least try to keep the criticisms somewhat grounded in reality.

Reality is Jake isnt going to last past this season and we are going to have a 4 million dollar cap hit or more for the next five years because of this retarded extension.

This is just bad business dealing on Hurney's part. One of the most impulsive decisions he's ever made.

Anyone remember the great year Jake had his 1st season with the Panthers? He was already under contract at the end of that season, but instead of waiting a full 2 seasons, or even half way into his next season, to see if the 1st year was an 'abberation', the Panthers gave a huge Extension to a new 1st-year Panthers QB.

Anyone remember what the Panthers, led by Jake, did the next season? They $ucked, and his numbers were ugly. If they had waited, since he was already under contract, they could have given him a pay raise or the extension but for a lot less money. I personally would have given him a generous bonus for the great job instead of a huge new contract at the end of his 1st season with the team. Point is, they weren't in a bind that year when they gave him that big extension.

The extension they gave him this year is at a time when they are in a CAP-strapped bind, and the deal helps the team. It is more business-smart than the one they gave him at the end of his 1st season.

I am not arguing at all with the very good reasons you gave for this being bad - I am just adding that there weren't too many alternatives, if any.

Yes, there are 2 other QB on the team, but one just came off injury and un-proven, and the other is un-proven. If Fox would have had half a freakin' brain in his head he would have pulled Jake and used the remainder of the Cards playoff blow out as an audition/opportunity for these 2 guys to prove themselves. Instead, he kept Jake out there which accomplished absolutely nothing!

Again, Fox is part of the problem. He allowed emotion to override his business / coaching sense. Jake has done well for this team, getting us farther and closer to a SB win than any other QB. Still, you gotta know when to say enough. Are we there yet? I am not completely ready to say 'Jake is a bum' because of 1 horrible game. I put just as much blame on Fox's head for that Card meltdown as I do Jake. Fox abandoned the run and everyone in the stadium knew Fox put the game in Jake's hands. With the D not being able to stop the Cards - again because of Fox refusing to rush and allowing Fitz to dictate the coverage, everyone also knew Jake was going to throw it. Anyone who studied even 1 game film on Jake ALSO knew Smitty is Jake's security blanket - Moose is ok, Jarret's 'light' had not come on yet, and Carolina doesn't throw to their TEs. Combine all that together, and you have a recipe for a meltdown/disaster, which it was! Not ALL Jake's fault.

Again, I agree with your reasons why this is bad, but you and I just possibly disagree that there was no other option and no money evenif there was.

The thing with the "one bad game" hypothesis, though, is that he was awful against the Raiders, wasn't very good against the Bucs in the first game, and had accuracy issues all year. Now, yes, that's possibly because of the TJ surgery, but it still has to be a major concern.

As I posted earlier, I'm ok with the move because it clears cap space...but we really need to be considering a replacement shortly. It does make me wonder why they're not ok with Moore getting an extended look (had to fight the urge for the obvious word, there). I mean, he can build his arm strength up, if that's the only real issue...
