Delhomme has new deal

You're freakin' hopeless!

Again, being CAP-strapped as we are because of JP, how were we going to get another QB to come to Charlotte, assuming there were any out there better than Jake to be Had?

You say Jake 'cr@pped the bed on the 12-4 team in the playoff lost, but you admit to a 12-4 season that Jake was partly responsible for! You probably will add that he had everything to do with the playoff loss but nothing to do with the 12-4 season; however, you will not admit that Jake didn't lose that playoff game alone. The D gave up a ton of points, the coach refused to pressure the QB and allowed Fitz to dictate the defensive match-up that allowed him to burn the Panthers over and over! That moronic playcalling, which IMO came from FOX, is probably why most of his defensive staff bailed on a 12-4 Carolina!

No money for other QBs, no better options at QB anyway, no money for signing draft picks, no relief in sight from Peppers....

You would rather have kept himon the roster for $11 Mil this season with no money to sign draft picks rather than do what is best for the team, which was to re-sign for $8 Mil a year and CAP room but also cost $20 Mil for Jake doing us this 'favor' - again very limited options!

Maybe you just like to b!tch?! Instead of telling us this move $ucked, give us a better solution! PLEASE!

Even if your contention is that Peppers has us strapped this year against the cap, which he does, how does that have any bearing on giving Jake Delhomme a 5 year contract extension? That is $20 million in PROMISED money. That's like saying i'm going to cut my leg off to avoid breaking my ankle again. You don't get out of cap trouble by extending players who have questionable futures with your franchise $20 million in straight away money even if it does give you some kind of immediate room to move.

Additionally, if Peppers is the only thing we're ham strung about then why don't we take what we can get for him at the draft and then move on? Market value is determined by what the teams around the league are willing to pay. If you haven't gotten an offer you like yet for Peppers, then perhaps you need to evaluate your opinion on what he would yield and just take the best offer available. Peppers played hard last year because he knew he was coming up for free agency and wanted to show teams he still had the goods. If we force him to play here another season, we're going to see the '07 version of Peppers for 16 more glorious games.

And i'll give Jake Delhomme credit for at least 2 or 3 of those wins last year, but even the most staunch supporter would have to admit that having 2 backs on your roster challenge for 1,500 and 1,000 yards each makes your job a virtual formality. Nobody asked Jake to win games for us last year, they just asked him not to lose them. That isn't the type of quarterback that you invest $42.5 million into and extend until he's 39 years old. I really don't care if he's a "young" 34 years old, which is one of the more odd statements that i've heard from Fox and Company.

You want a better solution? Here it is.

Going into the offseason, you find out that Peppers wants out and doesn't want to play here. You get Gross under contract like we did and you put the tag on Peppers. After you do that, you put an EXTREME amount of effort into finding him a home before teams started turning to free agents. Every team that signed an impact DE this offseason became another team to check off the list of suitors for him. Shop him in aggressive fashion and find a taker for him. High 2nd round pick, Low 1st round pick, whatever. Do what it takes to have him off the roster.

Talk to Jeff Garcia and promise him a legit chance to compete with Josh McCown for the starting job with Carolina for the upcoming season. With how it went down in Tampa, he probably would have relished the opportunity to come back and play well against them. He hasn't had a passer rating below 90.0 in the past three years and has 35 TDs and 12 picks in that time frame while getting limited starts in some of those. If you can get a solid commit from Jeff Garcia, then cut Jake Delhomme and get his name off the books.

Use one of your 1st picks of the NFL draft to select your quarterback of the future and have him learn under Garcia and groom him for a season or two until he's ready to take over the squad.

And don't assume this situation above was impossible to pull off. Even if you didn't get Garcia there were other guys out there that are starting material and have just as much to offer as Delhomme.

okay not trying to start nemore arguments or take any sides. but im juss curious. can anyone make any valid points for why this isnt a good move to extend jake for about 3 more years. (cause in reality thats all it will be cause its 20 million guaranteed.) besides the cardinals game or the fact that hes 34.....?

Vagrant, not even *I* would have wanted Jeff Garcia. Ew.

Yeah, he's a punk and he's a whiner but there aren't many out there that have been able to replicate his numbers. It's nearly inexplicable how he hasn't found a place to land for more than a season considering his incredible numbers year after year regardless of the system he's placed into. He's going to finish up with a HOF worthy passer rating. Note, I didn't say he was a HOF quarterback or even close but it's still quite strange that he has trouble finding a starting job when his numbers monkey-stomp those of Delhomme and half the other quarterbacks starting in this league.

For a stop gap, he's more than adequate. With the run first offense that we employ he'd be an ideal fit because he's mobile, sells the play action well, and connects at an unrealistic clip in completion percentage. If you can look away from all the nonsense he spews from his mouth, the stuff that comes from his arm is pretty good.

WOOO!!!

Glad to hear it. Hopefully this will save some cap room as well.

Delhomme is a great player with a great personality. You just don't see that in QB's.

Of course we have the bitchers, but at the very least, I want to see Delhomme play a full season before he is axed. The guy is good and has a perfect rapport with Smitty.

Enough of the display of total ignorance by squealing "What about the 5 year contract, what about the 5 year contract'!

Do any of you SERIOUSLY think there is ANY way he will be here in 3 years, let alone 5?! They could have made it a 25-year contract, and it wouldn't have made a difference!

Jake was smart enough to know that the only money he could ever count on was that $20 million he got up front as guaranteed!

If you paid attention to what his own agent said - "it was a complicated contract' you might understand a little better. Another thing guaranteed besides Jake's $20 mil is that this contract is loaded with clauses, 'gates', incentives, 'void options', etc that he will NEVER get the full $42+ Mil!

The San Diego Padres are currently paying a kid they got from Atlanta ALL of the bulk of something like $62 million even though they cut him - he gets to sit on his arse and collect that. NFL contracts DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!

THERE IS NO GUARANTEED 5 YEAR CONTRACT!

Wait, let me type it slower for those having a hard time following

T h e r e i s n o 5 y e a r C o n t r a c t... except on paper!

Everyone out there who believes Jake will be on the roster in 5 years, into his 40s, raise your hand. Come on - put 'em up.

Oh, I see 1....wait - you're wearing a Redskin Jersey. You don't count!

Ok, so stop with the 'Carlina was stupid because now we MUST keep Jake for 5 years and pay himthe total $42+ million dollars!'

This was a cap move and will never pay out much more than the #20 mil in bonus and PERHAPS the estimated $8 mil for this season (depending on what 'complicated contract' means)!

I'm collecting an archive of threads from this offseason and I can't wait to post excerpts from them after we go 6-10 next season and Jake has his worst year ever.

Some of you people will have to leave the Huddle permanently in shame.

What a great fan you are. Hoping we have the worst season in years just so you can rub some comments in on an internet message board.
