Delhomme has new deal

let me clear something up...

IMO, this move doesn't mean hurney is a bad GM. In fact, I think he is the perfect GM for our team. I like the moves he's made. I understand the move and the fact that we had to do something to make some cap space for a potential move or for the draft picks. I'm more upset with the fact that we are in this position as a franchise to have to complete a deal like this to a slightly above average QB.

If we didn't pull him during his massive choke in the playoffs, he'd need to actually die on the field to pull him for anything beyond this point, regardless of how much we're overpaying him.

Ehh, idk. Moore just had another year watching and learning and McCown had time to learn the system. I'd like to think we will be prepared for a situation like that.

The FO must have looked at the poll on thier own website regarding team needs, and thought to themselves hmmm....how can kick our own fans when they are down.

Cap move.. bla bla FUGGIN bla !

Lose a playoff game with best squad we have had in years and get 20 million....thats fuggin brilliant. What the f*ck is wrong with them !!!!!????????

First will be the boos...then people will be chanting for Hurney to go like they the fans did in Detriot with Mcmillian. The Jake lovers....take your laughs,,,,why you are proud of mediocrity is beyond me.

We are the tax payers for this team. We pay for the seats, beer, parking, buy thier jerseys ( not jakes!) and watch them on TV. You really fugged up not getting Cutler and to make it worse to give 20 million to a QB the city wants out!!! It doesnt matter if Jake wont play for the whole deal...he still gets 20 million and he doesnt deserve it. :mad5::mad5::mad5::mad5:::banghead::banghead::banghead::beatdeadhorse5:

Well I tell you what, you just go ahead and quit supporting the Panthers. I bet they don't even notice. That way of logic doesn't even empress me, it has no validation at all. An 12-4 team is gonna get all kinds of support at the stadium, regardless of what you have to say today. So go on, leave, it's not gonna make a mark, trust me on this...

Since Hurney doesn't negotiate contracts, I really don't see hearing a lot of boos, since even your average fan knows this.

I'm not condoning Jake, but I'm not condemning him either. It's time to sober up, get real and consider the alternatives. I'm sure you'll understand after you actually calm down and think about it...

5 years, $42+ Mil a Year, $20 Mil guaranteed

1. It's nice to be Jake Delhomme with a HUGE contract, the Panthers in CAP HE!!, and no better option than you available! You KNOW Carolina is going to come ask for an extension, which means you slightly have their 'assets' in a vice! "Smith, ask for $20 Mil in guaranteed because I KNOW that's all I can count on!"

2. "Smith, ask for $20 Mil in guaranteed because I KNOW that's all I can count on!" (Great Transition, huh?) A 'very complicated contract', IMO, means incentives, conditions, and lawyer verbiage that even Jake can translate to mean he will never see ALL that money and the end of that 5-year contract! He gets his $20 Mil guaranteed up front, a generous 'appreciative' sum for helping the Panthers out of a CAP problem!

3. He ain't that Bad. Although you are only as good as your last outing / perfirmance - which for Jake was a nightmarish melt-down - he ain't that bad. We did make it 12-4 last year with him, and those 4 were the ones against teams with real winning /impressive records. You can say he didn't win them all himself, but he didn't lose them - or those other 4 - by himself, either. He ain't that bad for 1 more season (which is all I expect him to remain on the team). Besides, would you have rathered they didn't extend and he stay the starter for another year at $11 Mil a game and not had any cash to sign our draft picks, OR would you rather have extended him, pay him $8 Mil, and have CAP room? Look at it THAT way, and ....this extension ain't that bad!

But it always comes back to one question. Who are you going to get, at a price the Panthers are willing to pay, that is better than Jake? An unproven rookie that will want big bucks or a veteran of 5 years or so who is no better and doesn't know the system? This was the right move for now.

The grim truth, unfortunately.

Good friggin' Lord what a bunch of whiners!

WHO was available we could have gotten that you would have wet yourself with excitement over?

Cassel? STFU! Even if he wanted to come to Carolina, so far Julius Peppers has done nothing but pi$$ and moan about not wanting to play for Carolina! He hasn't had his agent looking for teams to trade him to - he hasn't even signed his Franchise papers, and Carolina can't even BEGIN to talk to anyone about trading him until he does that! So, are you suggesting that CAP-strapped Caroilna should have traded what or who to get Cassel or paid with what money to any other QB on the FA market to get them to Carolina?

As I pointed out, we had a 12-4 season last year - the 4 teams we lost to were actual teams with winning records. Jake may not have won all 12 games by himself, but he sure didn't LOSE those 4 by himself either! He didn't even lose that Cards game by himself! We marched down the field and stuffed it down their throats for the 1st TD of the game. The Def gave up a TD, and the next series Carolina abandoned the run after 2-3 run plays were stuffed. The Def gave up another TD, and soon the whole gameplan was to have Jake throw every down, which even the Cards figgured out!

To make matters worse, FOX decided NOT to pressure the Cards' QB and allowed their star WR to dictate the coverage on him! Talk about 'brilliant'?!

For all you Jake-Haters and anyone else who thinks they could have worked JP and CAP magic and gotten a better QB that Delhomme to come to Charlotte this off-season, here's a little Jake stat for ya:

Posted by ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas

We posted some numbers on Jake Delhomme a bit earlier, but I just got another statistic passed along by Carolina communications director Charlie Dayton.

Since 2003, Delhomme has won 54 of his starts (regular season and postseason).

The only active quarterbacks to win more games in that span are Tom Brady (84), Peyton Manning (78), Ben Roethlisberger (59) and Donovan McNabb (56). Brett Favre also won 56 games in that span, but is no longer active -- well, as far as we know.

$20 Mil for that stat, Tommy Johns Surgery, coming back early, a 12-4 season, and helping Carolina out of their self-inflicted/JP-inflicted Cap problem is too much!?

hmmm...

I saw the misleading stat provided by Slurper Darin Gantt earlier in the thread and I wanted to show you all just how misleading it is.

Is it REALLY that impressive that only Manning, Brady, McNabb, and Roethlisberger have more wins than Delhomme since Delhomme became a full-time starter? Um, no, not really.

Here are the list of current starting quarterbacks that have even been starting since 2003:

Manning

McNabb

Brady

Kerry Collins

Drew Brees

Marc Bulger

Matt Hasselbeck

Kurt Warner

You could also throw Pennington and Culpepper in there, but they've missed LOTS of games in several years due to injury or even retirement in Culpepper's case.

So....Jake has less wins than three of them (and less than Roethlisberger who didn't even become a starter until '04) and has more than five of them.

Is having more wins than 55% of the other eligible quarterbacks *really* something that's that impressive?

;)

    • his height, size and arm will forever cause problems and limitations...that is what it is.  I think to a degree, the law of averages is just coming into play a bit with him.  So as he plays more and more, you just flat out get the decent days mixed in too.  Which is just going to happen.
    • Good point. He's definitely better in 10-15 yards. I think that's his biggest improvement. But he wasn't 3-10 +15, he was 3-7, with at least one drop (minor but still). And with multiple passes at 14 yards completed. This passing chart doesn't look like at By one, lol. He threw more "deep" passes than Mahomes (NOT comparing him to Mahomes in a skill way lol), or at least more beyind 10 yards.
    • Karlaftis and Danna have been pretty inconsistent so teams have been doubling Jones and able to contain their pass rush.   But the good thing is that yesterday, we schemed well against Steve Spags Defense, Canales married the surrounding personnel with his QB through play designs within his comfort zone and was able to get downfield at will.  He was able to execute higher difficulty throws and look a lot more comfortable.  It tells me that Canales has a good system in mind, and had an edge gameplanning wise against Spagnuolo - which is nice to see.  It's a bit to see-saw at times with either going way too pass heavy or way too run heavy, but I think he's finding out what works.  It takes time to have it come together, and sure, I could see regression happen against a better front-7, but this was good for the entire system gelling.
