The Offseason

Sign: Antonio Garay

Re-sign: Geoff Hangartner

The First Eight Picks:

Round 1, Pick #1 – Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

Round 1, Pick #2 – Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Round 1, Pick #3 – Matt Kalil, OL, USC

Round 1, Pick #4 – Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Round 1, Pick #5 – Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Round 1, Pick #6 – Riley Reiff, OL, Iowa

Round 1, Pick #7 – Melvin Ingram, DE/OLB, South Carolina

Round 1, Pick #8 – David DeCastro, OL, Stanford

Our Draft:

Round 1, Pick #9 - Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

The best CB in the Draft, and the best CB prospect in a long time according to some sources, Morris Claiborne’s name is starting to fall to us in some mock drafts now that the Redskins and Rams have completed their trade for what essentially equals to Robert Griffin III. Claiborne does a lot for the team. He provides an instant upgrade to a very bad pass-defense secondary, he makes teams decide to throw at him or Chris Gamble, he allows Darius Butler move to the nickelback full-time and Captain Munnerlyn to special teams full-time, positions where both could excel. He also gives us a future at the CB position. Learning under Chris Gamble could be one of the best things to ever happen to Claiborne, as well as our franchise, considering he could easily be a ten year Pro Bowler.

Round 2, Pick #8 – Sean Spence, OLB, Miami

We already have a Miami LB on the roster, and how has that worked out for us? Sean Spence is an instant starter in the NFL, and maybe one of the top five LBs in the draft. He's smart, he's fast, and he is a true student of the game. The guy can recognize plays instantly, and doesn't use any unnecessary movements closing on the ball. Thomas Davis could potentially back Spence up, if his knees prove able to handle some the small playtime as that, but Spence could definitely learn from the likes of Thomas Davis, making him a real stud.

Spence compares very closely to Thomas Davis, Spence is 5'11, Davis was 6'0. Spence weighs 231lbs, Davis weighs 240. Spence definitely wasn't a safety in college, but both players are very fast, and play very similarly.

Round 4, Pick #8 – Joe Adams, WR/OW/PR, Arkansas

Joe Adams provides an instant upgrade to Punt Returner and Kick Returner, replacing Armanti almost immediately. Joe also gives us a flexible option in the slot receiver spot by being a similar sized guy as Armanti, but while playing his natural position. Joe also took hand-offs out of the backfield, giving another wrinkle to the offense for Cam, Chud, and the rest of the offense.

Round 5, Pick #9 – Nate Potter, OL, Boise State

Nate Potter has actually drawn comparisons to Nate Solder. Seriously. But, he needs to work on a few things before he can get into the NFL. Sometimes, he gets caught flat-footed and just lets guys bull-rush around him. (Byron Bell?) But he has the potential to be a very, very good player if he works on the things he needs to work on. I think he could immediately replace Byron Bell if his OTAs and Training Camp go as well as they should, but, competition could only make Byron Bell better.

Round 6, Pick #8 – Matt Daniels, S, Duke

Matt Daniels is a guy a lot of people haven’t heard about, but he’s a very good player. He does translate more into a true Strong Safety at the next level, which is fine, since we can move over Charles Godfrey to FS, where he had his best season as a pro. Matt Daniels reportedly ran a 4.43 40y dash, and was highly touted at Duke for being a great special team’s player. He also took over the play calling on Duke’s defense and was selected as an Academic All-American at Duke, so obviously he has the intelligence to pick up McDermott’s complex defense.

Compensatory Pick Round 6(or 7), Pick #TBD – Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin

I doubt that Derek Anderson will be back, and I think Pickles will be off the team next season, so that leaves a hole to be filled in the late rounds. Russell Wilson is cut from the same mold as RGIII, he’s only shorter, which drops him into the late rounds. He had a fantastic season at Wisconsin, and played very well at NC State before he graduated. Drafting Russell Wilson will allow the back-up QB to be similar to the starting QB, so that whenever Wilson has to step in, the offense doesn’t change at all.

Round 7, Pick #9 – Drew Butler, P, Georgia

I know some people don't think we should draft a Punter, but you have to ask yourself if the punter is going to be there as a UDFA, and if he's good enough to use a final draft pick on. Drew Butler is that good. He's not Quinn Sharp, but he's definitely good. With Jason Baker having the most punt returns for TDs among active punters, we need to start looking elsewhere. A guy that averaged 44yards+ punting last season definitely could fit that mold.

Loveeeeeeeeeee it. If Cleveland is dumb enough not to trade for griffin, they may be dumb enough to pass on Morris. As for Tampa bay, they always make dumb picks so i could possibly see this happening

Cleveland reportedly has fallen absolutely in love with Justin Blackmon (which probably means they also want to trade their #22 pick for Tannehill), which became obvious when they had eight scouts and Pat Shurmur all at Blackmon's Pro Day.

And Tampa Bay has been said to definitely want to get a star RB, to fit their new system.

As I've said Cleveland had the second best pass defense in the NFL. It wouldn't be dumb to address and actual need. Offense.

That said, if Claiborne is on the board when St Louis picks, that's who they'll pick.

I like Spence, but I think 2nd is too soon for him. I think he will go in the third, but he might fall to our 4th. I would take him in a heartbeat in the 4th

I definitely think that the second round might be early for Spence, but I think by the time that we get there at 4 he's definitely been drafted. So, at that time, it becomes drafting for a position of need instead of BPA.

Plus, I think even if we thought he'd be there in the fourth, Joe Adams is a piece we definitely need for our team. He would give our offense an option, and he would instantly upgrade the returner position.

Love the first pick, meh on the 2nd. I'd rather get M. Martin (or whatever other Safety floats their boat) or Chandler Jones/Cam Johnson in the 2nd than Spence. Adams in the 4th is fine, then Demario Davis in the 5th (or take him in the 4th if they're worried he'll be gone).

Wouldn't be mad with this draft considering you got us getting Claiborne. Only problem is Matt Daniels. I watch ACC football. He isn't that good. I'm a UNC fan.

That was accidental pie, btw. I disagree, I thought Daniels was a really good player for Duke. The guy was ALWAYS around the ball. I'd like to have him in the 6th or 7th.
