Is it odd to anyone else that they cut everybody, put Freeney on the trade block but then re-signed Mathis for 4 year deal? I just don't quite understand the reasoning.

Mathis at 245lbs will convert to OLB in Pagano's hybrid defense and has utility there. Freeney is a DE who is too light to play a 3-4 and not versatile enough in space or against the run to play OLB so he is not a good fit. THey are willing to trade Freeney because he is 32 and a free agent next year anyway. They want to get something for him while they can.

If Freeney is willing to redo his contract perhaps for 4 years, 36 million with 20 guaranteed which is what Mathis got, he would be a great pickup for a 4-3 team in need of DE help. Otherwise I doubt they get much action. As for us, I just don't know we have that kind of money. Now teams like Tampa or even Atlanta make sense, as much as I would not love it.
