Free Agent Countdown: Teams that can't spend

I think the overspending was a reaction from all the negative publicity during Foxes last year where both fans and players were pissed at JR.JR may be at least partially to blame and he did overpay to build confidence with the players and fan base.

The bottom line its is done so let move on and not get in that position again.

Well, you can argue CJ's deal was questionable...sure the dude should of been paid but I think the deal even surprised Johnson. Think he voiced that. So based on what Johnson said about the offer an what other teams were saying....we paid more than we needed to.

I think overall the article is spot on to a large degree

Yea he got overpaid, but sometimes to keep a player off a division rival... you have to

Yeah, but we didn't have to pay him what we did to keep him away from them...

In all honesty, I can't think of a starter that got a new deal while still here in Carolina didn't opt to pay them on the high side or just flat out overpay.

At some point that costs a team.

poorly written. was this on bleacher report or something? lost interest quickly.

btw...are we now allowed to post entire articles AND not put a link? i thought those were two no-nos around here (or any well run site not interested in getting sued).

it's obvious some of you have the blinders on and/or don't pay attention to other teams around the league to know what constitutes good cap management and what doesn't

yeah let's just ignore that Hurney has fielded a competitive team(while keeping us out of cap trouble) for over a decade because we had two bad seasons. he has always been fantastic at cap management until we lost our quarterback. he may have made a couple mistakes the last couple years but it does not mean it's the norm.

Last 10 years. 3 winning seasons.

Guess it depends on what your definition of being a competitive team for a decade means.

competitive may have been a bad word, but we've never been a bottom of the barrel team until the past two years.

about 4 days left until free agency, and there has almost been no word out of the panthers and their moves to relieve salary cap. I can't remember if they usually wait this long to announce their moves, is this typical?

they usually wait.

Johnson was overpaid in that the Panthers offered close to $20 million more tan the next bidder.

Other than the comments about signing another wide receiver the article was spot on IMO.

To be fair, any figures we heard after the signing were misleading. The truth is that there were several teams that had serious interest in CJ, Atlanta being one of them, and he was someone we HAD to re-sign. So Hurney made an offer right out of the blocks that was meant to fend off other suitors before they got started.

In the end, we may have overpaid, but since we headed off any competition from the start, we really don't know what his true market value would have been if there was a genuine bidding war, which likely would have happened if we didn't start off high.
