Free Agent Countdown: Teams that can't spend

Although Cam Newton revitalized the offense, virtually all of the veterans Hurney retained failed to live up to expectations.

Yeah Ryan Kalil sure didn't live up to expectations. not like he was the best center in the NFC and tbh probably the NFL, the top guys(Mangold, Kalil, etc) are for the most part interchangeable and neither is noticeably better than the other

Running back DeAngelo Williams was effective, but only carried the ball 155 times in a rare healthy season.

No argument, was a bad deal

Linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis were given in excess of $80 million in contract extensions but combined to make it through just one regular-season game before going on injured reserve.

herp derp every GM in the NFL would have given Beason that extension. You can't blame him for that.. and Davis' contract can and will be terminated within a week, so that's a non factor.

Defensive end Charles Johnson had nine sacks, but that's a pedestrian figure for a player who got a $72 million contract to stay with the team.

lol

Ignorant article. The only contract that's even remotely questionable was the Deangelo one and while it may be a little more than he's actually worth to the team right now, I'm more than fine with it because it's a reward for past accomplishments and being a team player (waiting for his rookie deal to play out and then dealing with the team instead of pulling a Chris Johnson).

right on the money about Hurney. That spending spree was stupid in so many ways--we will feel it in a few years. Thomas Davis had 2 consecutive knee surgeries on his ACL and a year left on his contract. MH extended him, giving him a couple million guaranteed. For that reason alone, he should not have a job. Throw in the DW, CJ, Godfrey, Kalil (not the best center in the NFL, sorry), and Beason (not the best MLB in the NFL, sorry) deals, and you need no more evidence. With all that money, coming off a 2-14 year and getting a stud QB in the draft, we played with 2 rookies at DT, scrubs at CB, and an OL that cannot protect the passer. If you have $50 million or so in cap room, you do not reward players, you upgrade. Nothing wrong with some reasonable contracts, but some of our players admitted that they were stunned by the contract amounts. Hurney cannot draft after the first round, we are not bringing in a bunch of free agents, so he was trying to hang onto his job for another year or two--the same reason he traded away future picks to get Otah and Everette Brown--and Armanti. One day, people will realize that picking safely in the first round is not rocket science and they will quit praising him for it. He is a joke.

I don't believe we wasted lot money on worthiness players, i do believe we could had sign each one cheaper tho. Like D. Williams he's getting paid like a 1200+ back yearly basis.

Charles Johnson got 9 sacks while playin on one the worst D-Line and being double team lot, i thought was good. Hopefully our rookie DT get better with year experience and Edwards coming back his numbers will jump.

No problem paying Beason what he got, he's arguably the best MLB in the league, No one knew he was going get put on IR in week 1.

Marty Hurney, im sure he anticipated on restructuring contracts this year like Gamble, Gross, Wharton, Davis, Smith. Im hoping he release Baker, Mare, and Clausen. Doing that should give us money spend in FA and draft.

right on the money about Hurney....

Wall of text...

You and the article focus a lot on the 2-14 record. What have that to do with the players and contracts? Kalil, Beason and CJ are all among the best at their positions and produced like that in that 2-14 season. TD what a risk signing but you makes it sound as that contract bankrupted the team. Had he played at the level he can Hurney would have looked like a genius. I like that gamble, if he make that gamble yet again this season then let us talk.

Regarding Godfrey and D-Will you might have a point.

Your point about getting FAs over rewarding your own players is as stupid as it gets. Ask Snyder how many championships that tactic will get you. Draft well and keep a core of your own players around.

"Hurney cannot draft after the first round" What?

Kalil

Wharton

Hangartner

LaFell/Gettis

CJ

Godfrey

Anderson

Foster

Spoon

Manning

Haye

Mathis

Marshall

Montgomery

Bernadeau

Connor

Munnerlyn

Martin

Hardy

While all are not pro bowlers they all have played and started a lot of games and produced on the field. And you make it sound as picking in the 1st round is easy, but Panthers is the only team that have not picked a bust in the years with Hurney in charge (Otah the only iffy one but he is a beast when healthy )

And no we will not feel it in a few years. In fact when the cap goes through the roof in a couple of years we will have all of our core players under cheap contracts.

You is a joke.

Johnson was overpaid in that the Panthers offered close to $20 million more tan the next bidder.

Other than the comments about signing another wide receiver the article was spot on IMO.

Well, you can argue CJ's deal was questionable...sure the dude should of been paid but I think the deal even surprised Johnson. Think he voiced that. So based on what Johnson said about the offer an what other teams were saying....we paid more than we needed to.

I think overall the article is spot on to a large degree
