34 - Not the Defense

I don't get people wanting Cam NOT to run....last year was like a vacation for him in that department. He is too big of matchup nightmare to scale running down much more

than they did in the 2nd half of last year.

If you want Cam to have a soph slump...the easiest way is to curb his running this upcoming year.

Not saying he shouldn't run, just the offense should be more selective in when he runs. Qb's are far to valuable to have them diving into or over the pile on a 2nd and 1 on our side of the field. And every time he runs, thats more of a chance that he will get injured. If Cam were to get seriously injured on a 3yrd run, this message board might implode.

Yep, and it would be all of the same people saying he should run, going:

"Why was he running??!?! What an idiot...I knew he would get hurt sooner or later....gawsh."

I was just picking a name at random to show how f-ing stupid the re-signing was.

Another poster mentioned that it's not all about rushing yards in our offense, I was just mentioning that DWill was way way down on the total yards board.

You do know that we are running a Norv Turner style O here....the same one that made Sproles a star in SD?

Sproles while not getting 2600+ all purpose would have excelled in our system, would have been a perfect 3rd down back to compliment Stew, and would have solved our return issues.

Williams was a very dumb move by Hurney, and we are paying the price now. (cap problems)

But the point remains the same which is quality stats allow you to compare backs who are utilized differently.

As for the SD system versus ours, they are not as similar as you would think given we have adapted ours to fit Newton and the power running game of our backs. While they both still fits the category of a vertical passing game, SD does not feature a running option variation or a pistol formation like we do.

Sproles was not a star in SD to the point they wouldn't let him go. He was much more productive in NO. And lastly half of his yards were return yards. In terms of running and passing he accounted for 1330 yards and Wiilliams accounted for 971. The difference was Sproles was primarily a receiver and Williams was primarily a runner so obviously Sproles would get more yards given the both averaged around 8.3 yards per reception. Plus they had Brees and an offense that has been there for for years. Could Sproles have been effective in our system, likely more as a returner than a featuure back. But again this isn't about Sproles but Williams. Because Sproles was a steal doesn't make Williams terrible.

Newton is safer running than hanging in the pocket looking for the deep ball.

Will Williams get 1000 yards overall. Last year he got off to a slow start and ended up with 981 so can he get 19 yards more than last year? Unless he gets hurts, it should definitely occur. Stewart got 1155 combined yards so I could see him upping that to over 1200.

I can see where folks say that WIlliams is overpaid while Stewart is a deal but that was because Wiliams got paid first. I guess the naysayers will be criticizing Stewart as well when he gets his big payday sometime this year or next. If either gets hurts and the other has to carry the load, folks will be glad we have 2 starting quality backs on the team versus one starter and an average backup.

I never said Williams was terrible, or even bad, or average. Just that we didn't need him, and we certainly "long term" couldn't afford him.

I am making the point that this team needed a change of pace back, that can catch and pass protect on 3rd down. Instead we got an older, slower, 2nd string back with many of the same talents of our 1st stringer. And a cap his this year of over 8.5 million.

Sproles was a star in SD. Do you realize that they placed the franchise tag on him the year before?

Again, I am not comparing the two side by side and saying that Sproles is the better player/rb. I am comparing the two side by side and also looking at the contracts side by side. Darren wins in a landslide, and it's not even close.

Stewart will be getting his big payday at 26.... and without 1st rounder who is younger on the roster.

DeAngelo got his payday at 28....with a 1st rounder and younger stud on the roster.

I don't think similar complaints will be made?

If the passing game develops....and one gets hurt you can find a RB who fits the scheme...and Cam and that RB will provide more than a sufficient ground attack

Williams is being paid like a top 5 back, on a team that he does not even start on.

It's dumb as hell.
