what does the coverage team have anything to do with Baker taking 5 seconds to kick the ball and only having the ball travel 25 yards? We can't blame Crossman for everything. oh wait-

Baker didn't go overnight from being pretty dang good to horrible.

You don't think he has tried to make adjustments due to how bad our special teams have been...trying to make adjustments in kicking b/c of a poor special teams cast sometimes can yield poor results.

Baker has a good leg. He can't use it though.

Also, I am not blaming ST coaching. Players still make plays or they don't. Our talent on special teams has been a joke in recent years. ST is more than a K and P.

Baker: 66 punts. Long: 56 (last in nfl); AVG: 42.7(29th in NFL); NET 35.7(Last); AVG per return 13.3 yrds (30th); Inside 20: 19 (tied 27th); Touchbacks: 5(tied 19th)

Medlock: last year 119 punts; Long: 73; AVG: 41.9; NET 36.7

Let's all keep in mind that Medlock kicked 27 more field goals than Mare and 53 more punts than Baker in one season and still outperformed Mare by a mile while performing comparably to one of the highest paid punters in the NFL. Championship.

but again, you can't judge a punter on his stat sheet.....that typically tells you more about ST as a whole.

Obviously kicking FGs is Medlock's strength but he's not too bad a punter. As I said, I hope he has a really good camp and gets the job. I've no faith in Mare. I cringe even when he steps up to make a standard NFL FG.

Are you insinuating that Baker holds onto the ball for longer than he should and kicks it only 25 yards to give our bad coverage time to get down the field? I'm not sure I follow.

I am saying, Baker taking comically too long on 1 kick...doesn't mean it has been a consistant issue his entire career here or over the course of that particular season.

Baker has a great leg. Baker can't use it b/c of horrific coverage. If he uses his leg he will simply drastically out kick our weak ST coverage unit.

Baker's biggest issue for most of his career was he often would over kick the coverage...now people are acting like he has a noodle for a leg.

Mare is BIG problem. Our weak ST players are another problem. Baker isn't the type issue some make him out to be IMO. Get better players on ST....let Baker kick it. I am not against gettign rid of the P and K....but think a priority would be simply getting more talent on ST than replacing Baker.

CHARLOTTE - The Panthers have signed kicker Justin Medlock, a 2007 draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs who has enjoyed success in the Canadian Football League.

The team has also waived kicker Adi Kunalic, who rejoined the team late last season to provide competition for veteran kicker Olindo Mare. That opportunity now falls to Medlock.

"We think he's a good person to bring in to training camp to provide competition," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said. "He's a young, talented kicker. Whenever you have an opportunity to sign young, talented players, you sign them and let them come in and compete."

The left-footed Medlock made 49-of-55 field goals for the Grey Cup champion Hamilton Tiger-Cats last season. Over three CFL seasons, the first two with the Toronto Argonauts, he hit 96-of-111 field goals. He also punted in 2009 and 2011, averaging 41.9 yards.

"Like a lot of young kickers, he has bounced around some," Hurney said. "He obviously has a lot of ability."

Medlock was a first-team All-American at UCLA in 2006, prompting the Chiefs to select him in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He was Kansas City's kicker for the season opener but was waived by the Chiefs after missing a 30-yarder in his debut.

why do we lose the Arizona game?

it was a damn near PERFECT punt. Peterson should of had his head removed...kick was set up to either be fair caught or have PP murdered.

Result? epic TD run. Cardinals win. Even when put in IDEAL scenarios his coverage blew chunks. Replace Mare, improve ST talent....then worry about P.
