A 140 meter rock isn't a big deal. It can be nuked to knock it out of the way, or to blow it apart. Even if one hit that we didnt know about, there would be a less than 1% chance that it would hit a city.

It is the Mt. Everest sized rocks that are serious biz.

about equivalent to a 150 megaton explosion. so unless you think that only extinction level events are a big deal, i'd say this qualifies.

it's funny because nuking it isn't even something that's being discussed, why do you think that might be?

150 megatons is a pretty big blast (I thought that the article said 100 not 150)

But it is still only a littl bit larger than the largest nuclear bomb. The US and Russia have blown up thousands of bombs in the pacific, some of them, the "Tzar Bomba", were 50 megatons.

It would take a rock 10x that size to cause a global scale reaction.

dunno man, depends what it's made of. even if it manages to miss major metropolitan areas, i think it's gonna be a pretty crappy decade for that hemisphere. like i said, not extinction level, but something 3 times the size of the tsar flying uncontrolled into earth qualifies as a big deal.

tunguska was estimated to have been around 10-15 megatons.
