Poe is Mayock's top DT

this is what concerns me about our defense.. we don't have the pieces for a 4-3, much less the luxury of running a 3-4..

I say that with concern to the linebacker positions (depth and starters).. and then you're next question is what about DLine? I know right.. so many pieces to fill..

I hope our offense steps it up this year and continues to dominate.. It's going to take another year or two after this draft to get to where we want to be.. and it's also going to take solid draft picks with little error..

I know people are clamoring SUPERBOWL!! but reality is we are still a ways off..

Nah man don't say stuff like that! I feel Superbowl. Rivera will get this D straight sooner than later. But that's just my opinion budd

I would guess that a couple of free agent siginings and a solid draft could help us. I'm not saying Super Bowl run but I am leaning towards playoff Run. With NO out of the picture, the South could be ours.

If you go back 10 years, not many DT's taken in the top 10 have made immediate impacts other than Suh
i don't expect him to be a suh.

He would become part of the rotation, and improve the line without a doubt, getting better throughout the season.

His size, speed, and ability are rare.

Ya can't teach that.

I'm fine with Poe at #9.

IMO, we should sign Garay, draft DT first and CB second. Spend the rest of the draft picking athletic LBs and O-linemen.

Getting Garay, or any quality vet DT, is the first order of business. It would make reaching for a DT in the first somewhat more palettable.

With a little luck (More than a few returning injured produce. Both our first and second rounders produce. And we do acquire a quality vet DT.) We could be playoff bound.

Would we still have holes to fill? Sure. But there should be a lot less than this year. And that means we are improving. We very well could be playoff team this year, and are basically only half way through the building process.

Anyway. The future, thanks to the Aint's, just got brighter. And GOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!

so he says not many DTs have made an immediate impact and you blow up that whole argument with one other exception.. lol

like I pointed out in CatsGrowl's thread.. DT has one of the highest bust rates in the 1st round.. Also, as I already debunked in that same thread, it takes time for rookie DTs to learn technique, even strength/conditioning is an issue.. Aside from NFL OL having more time to get right, college level DTs also aren't used to playing more than 13 games a year..

sure it's possible, but it's not the majority..

we'll see how it goes.. FO better hit on some FAs and draft without much error.. I think we could make a playoff run, it's possible..

I'm sure that won't change the negatice poe vibe that many have

Mayock is the first to say, ya rate by tape. If they hve a good combine, then ya go back and watch more tape, to comfirm or deny.

Most experts agree, he is the best dt in the draft. Worth the 9th overall, whether ya agree or not.

Of coourse, this doesn't mean the Panthers will draft him..

I do not have game film so I cannot make an informed opinion.I watched the combine and he was amazing....and then I hear people on the board and TV that his game film was not that impressive against weak opponets.I dont know what to believe.

I agree, we absolutely must hit homeruns with our first and second picks. These guys have to make an impact for us to just get to the hump. A FA DT or CB would help push us past that hump and into a serious playoff run.

I am not thrilled with our position at 9 when almost all agree that the talent level is more mid round and up. We are going to reach for a DT, and I abhor reaching. Even if that reach is only a handful of spots, it is still a reach.

Sign Garay, and that reach is acceptable.

Poe and Brockers, and Co. may be a reach at 9, and may need time to properly develop. But I have to admit, they would still upgrade the DT postion immediately. With a vet in the mix the D-line would have a realistic chance of being very good. One more need addressed.

So much going on. My giddy is in football heaven. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!1

actually, that is optimistic.....Poe didn't actually play much better in college than some of our existing DTs. He is still a guy whose stock was up pre combine b/c of his absurd physical abilities.

in 2012, with a Poe type guy...you have to be open to the fact it is a possiblity he would be no better than our cast of young guys.

I'm sorry, but I'm still not 100% sold on Poe. He put up great numbers at the combine and is in tremendous shape, but I'm worried about the mental and technical side of his game.

Marty is pretty cautious in the first round. Workout warriors with average game tape are not top 10 picks. Poe and Brockers are raw.

Still and Cox are known quantities, but not worth a top 10 pick.

Brockers and Still have question marks too, moreso than a player like DeCastro or Kuechly. We had 3 rookie DTs last year-- not sure we want one in 12

Don't think another rookie DT is necessary, rather try and sign Garay or another veteran DT and use #9 on another position

fwiw, most Buffalo fans will say Dareus made a huge impact this year. By the numbers, he had a good year for a DT even if he wasn't Suh...

Suh was beyond just "impact." He basically transformed the defense. That isn't something we are likely to get where we are picking. There are no DTs at this level this draft.

I don't see us picking up any DT's in the draft unless Rivera and co. feel he is a rare talent whose success rate is highly likely. He has been high on our young guys there, despite fans perceptions (misperceptions?) of them. We have Edwards coming back, and he should at least be solid (a reasonable expectation considering his history), as well as several young guys that played decent and showed that they're worth developing.

Also don't forget, when we need pressure up the middle, CJ has proven to be effective there in key situations. And with Rivera specifically stating improving our pass rush as a primary need, I can see us adding a pass rushing edge rusher in the second that (along with Hardy) would allow us to get pressure from the outside with CJ providing the inside rush on obvious passing downs.

So unless Rivera sees a rare talent, I just don't think a DT will be taken in the first...no matter how many fans become irrationally infatuated by one.
