Brees Refuses to Sign Franchise Tender, "Livid" With Saints Org

They offered Brees a deal that would make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. Although he isn’t the best quarterback in the NFL, Brees earned that salary, in the eyes of the New Orleans brass, with his play and leadership in New Orleans.

But being No. 1 wasn’t good enough for Brees. He insisted on more.

The Saints offered Brees more than the $18.5 million per season Tom Brady and Peyton Manning make (made in Manning’s case now). They offered him a $30 million signing bonus. New Orleans offered Brees the second-highest amount of guaranteed money in NFL history in the first three years of his deal. Brees didn’t ask for $20 million per season as a response to the New Orleans offer. He countered by demanding $23 million per season. The Saints and Brees are far apart.

The Saints’ offer remains on the table. New Orleans would love for Brees to sign it. Thus, New Orleans was left with no choice but to give Brees the franchise tag. Sadly, that means they couldn’t tag star guard Carl Nicks. As a result, he likely will get a bigger offer via free agency and leave. New Orleans still has to deal with receiver Marques Colston, receiver Robert Meachem and cornerback Tracy Porter. There is a realistic chance they could all go as free agents.

Brees represented a pied piper for the Saints after Hurricane Katrina. He had a chance to do that after “Bounty Gate.” New Orleans wanted to reward him for the past and honor him for the future. But Brees wanted more money. And it will hurt the Saints’ chances of winning.

Fake class politician like mother fuger. Had the Saints and their fans fooled into putting him on such a high pedestal.

I like being right.

My No. 1 priority, and it always has been this, is keeping our team together and making sure we have the right guys in the right positions to make a run at this for a long time.

bwahahaha! Suckers!

Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement

Guys guys now we know where this came from they spelt Brees wrong :)

Low blow? don't care.

IRONY: Take Nicks and Colston away, and Brees is not as great as he is now. He is a short QB who is good when he has 3 pro bowl OL--mainly the 2 all-pro Guards in front of his munchkin butt keeping his vision clear. However, to maintain this luxury, they will have to pay their 2 guards around $15 million. Colston will want around $7 million or more. Brees wants $23 million. 4 players demanding $45 million per. Over 1/3 of the cap.

i don't think that colston was vital to brees success. they and their WR coach did a great job of making average at best WRs look great.

of course that WR coach is gone now so.....

now losing nicks, that is going to hurt. they'll probably use their first pick in the draft to pick up an OG, though.

Uh oh bressing2anotheranalbeadcramming, looks like your little Brees is still pissed off. LOL

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/08/duncan-says-brees-wont-sign-franchise-tender/

Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune said during Thursday’s PFT Live that Brees won’t be signing the tender and won’t be present when the Saints assemble for offseason workouts next month.

And, as Duncan also pointed out, that will cut against the team-first image that Brees has crafted in New Orleans. Still, for Brees to get the kind of contract that he wants, he’ll need to be willing to stay away from offseason workouts (and possibly more), even if it makes Brees look bad in the eyes of Saints fans.

Meanwhile, good luck having a meaningful offseason program without the starting quarterback in the building.
