If you want a DT in the draft, read this and then tell me why you do

You need to look closer at the DTs. Gap between 1 and 5-6 isn't much. None or even worth a high draft pick. There will be someone we can take with our #2

Exactly, we can get someone in the second that has just as much skill as Brockers. He's moved up the boards because of his size and the fact he's from LSU. "Which is a mistake, because LSU DT's suck and have a poor track record in the NFL.

I'm not arguing whether DT is a bigger need than others but your logic is hugely flawed. Brees had a great game against the Packers (very good CBs) and the Giants and Vikings (great DEs). It makes no sense to say "Brees had a good game against the Lions who have good DTs so that proves DT isn't our biggest need." Brees had a good game against teams with great DEs, does that mean DE isn't our biggest need?

Your TD logic is flawed without looking at specific examples. A team could run up the middle from the 20 to the 1 yard line than run a pitch to the left. Just because the TD wasn't scored by running up the middle doesn't mean it performed better than to the outside.

You compare the Viking and Eagles starting defensive ends sacks numbers to ours yet both of those teams have a great DT. So that would actually help the argument that better DT play would help our DEs get more sacks.

For everyone that pounced on me I have a question for you,

If we pass on a DT in the first 2 rounds and end up going CB AND DE in the first 2 rounds how bad do you think our defense will be next year?? Feel free to answer here or in this thread...http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/carolina-panthers/78210-if-we-pass-on-dt-in-rounds-1-and-2-are-we-destined-for-failure-on-defense.html

considering teams take time to get from point A to point B, I'm sure it'll be a work in progress and we'll see how they gel together: both as young pieces to the puzzle all the way to can the vet come back and stay healthy...

/thank me later

I don't give a crap what the stats say I watch this team every game and we need help in the middle. It might not have to come from the draft (as I would be content with just Jason Jones signing) but there needs to be some DT talent brought in this year.

We had 2 rookie DTs playing together... NO poo is was going to be bad. Especially with the shortened offseason. While I am in no way saying that we are absolutely set at DT, let's give McClain/Fua a chance to play with a DT (Ron Edwards) who actually knows what he is doing, and see how they perform...

That being said Munnerlyn was absolutely horrible. CB (and even Safety) are clearly the biggest need in the offseason

Oh, and maybe we were so bad up the middle because we were missing a guy named JON BEASON

Fua and McClain might have got the short end of the stick with the lock out and everything, but still they should have got better as the season went on, and IMO they did, but that would be like putting whip cream on sh!t and saying it would taste better.

Your logic is completely flawed.

Rookie Defensive Linemen typically get worse later in the season. They get worn down from the pounding they endure....and are nowhere near ready for coming out of college. Compound that with no OTA's and a soft training camp, and you get what we had.

One of my biggest reasons for wanting DT in the 1st is because it would seem we can get a much better CB in the second than DT. After the top 3 DTs (Brockers, Poe, Cox) there's a noticeable dropoff. After Claiborne there's a slight dropoff, and then at least 5 or 6 very solid players who I feel the same about: Jenkins would be higher if not for the huge character concerns and Kirkpatrick, Minnifield, Gilmore, Dennard, Hayward and Hosely are all about equal. There's some others I don't know much about but are put in the same group: Trumaine Johnson, Brandon Boykin and a couple others I'm probably forgetting.

So basically I think the total combine value of taking DT in the 1st and CB in the 2nd is much higher than taking Jenkins or Kirkpatrick in the 1st (bleh) and then having to choose from Brandon Thompson, Jerrell Worthy or Kendall Reyes in the 2nd (all 3 I think can be solid pros, but wouldn't be nearly as big of an upgrade as one of the previously mentioned CBs would be). I'd take Claiborne in the 1st if he were available, but if not give me Brockers or Poe. Or if we can trade down, Cox.

Sign a DT in FA....draft LB/DE in the first....draft CB in the 2nd.

That is the roadmap.

This would really make a lot of sense if we didn't have Marty Hurney. The free agents he would get would be seventh round "does he have anymore in the tank" guys.

The more we discuss this the more I realize who is at fault for the complete and total suckage at WR and DT. If we're not willing to pick up top talent in FA we have to be perfect in the draft.
