Might be nice to have off season and team report

I can honestly say I think that's absolutely insane. No one even knows if Davis can play anymore, much less how much he can contribute, and if he can contribute in a full-time starting role. I would say if Davis does play this year, he will be the back-up, not some dude out of FA or the draft.

Davis is gonna start, trust me. If he can play, he will start. If he gets injured then we'll cut our ties with him and be done with it. His football IQ would be better than any-other guy player we draft, Davis is a leader, He's an all-pro linebacker when healthy.

Being a leader is awesome, and having great football IQ is fantastic, but who knows if he's healthy? If the doctor tells Rivera to play him in limited situations, do you think he's going to start? No. Especially in a defense that's blitz heavy, and especially when opposing offenses would just run at him over and over and over again.

I seriously, seriously doubt Davis will start this season. If he does, it will be because of his name and what he's meant to the team.

Uhm, Davis has never said the doctor has put limitations on his playing ability, or what he can or not do. He's pretty much said many times he can fully recover.

He's said it, sure. Do you think he's going to be like, "the doctor said I can't play, well dagnabit, I'm not playing"? No. He's a competitor, of course he wants to play.

But, Rivera also has to look at it from a team standpoint. It's about more than Thomas Davis being a leader. If there is someone out there who can be more relied on to start consistently then he should be the starter. End of story. If Rivera thinks that guy's in the draft, then he takes him, and there's a competition in Training Camp.

Davis, who turns 29 next month, received a good report last week from Dr. James Andrews, a renowned orthopedist who performed Davis' third surgery in September. Unlike Davis' first two surgeries - when doctors used tendons from Davis' right leg - Andrews took the patellar tendon from Davis' left knee to rebuild his right ACL.

"The knee is solid as a rock," Davis said. "Those were (Andrews') words."

Wouldn't it be nice if charlotte.com would do meaningful updates?

...just a weekly snapshot of the team, the injuries, the strategies, or potential strategies, and expectations of the coming season would be nice.

I guess the only thing that disappoints me a little bit is Rivera's constant, and I say constant as it seems to come up in every interview I read of him 'learning to be a head coach'. Sorry Harbaugh didn't have to do a lot of learning and I'm really not sold on McDermott or the personnel on the defensive side of the ball. There were moves that could have been made that were not. Look at the stubborness to stay with Fua and McClain and how much better the run defense was when they were BOTH out together.

Granted the comparison with Harbaugh may not be fair as the 49ers were loaded with talent. Regardless, between free agency and the draft, there is zero excuse for the Panthers defense and special teams to be a sieve this year.

Fix it.

There probably aren't any updates to give. Carolina never lets their information out of the basket until the last possible second. We were the first team in awhile not to reveal who we were going to take first overall in the draft the day before (although it was pretty obvious it'd be Cam). Our personnel movements when it comes to re-signing our players usually go slow and take awhile. This past offseason was the first time I'd seen us extend so many players as quickly as we did and that had a lot to do with the lockout.

I don't think we'll hear anything about Davis, Smith, Clausen, etc. until the day before free agency officially begins or whenever the date is to cut them to avoid paying them their bonus. Or, in Smith's case, look to restructure.

    • Agreed on the last part. They can’t afford to lose all these games with Martin and Perets.
    • Yes.  And this converts directly to confidence.  Does the coach have confidence to call a deep dig or seam route?  Does Bryce have confidence in his ability to be the Alpha?  Do his teammates have confidence.  About film--when I see Cam Newton's pre-snap confidence vs. Bryce's, it is night and day.   Film--tells you if the WRs are open (why l love watching the Replay telecasts from the end zone cameras--you can see it.  I have seen 2 WRs open and Bryce's eyes are on the outlet WR or the pass rush. )  You can see progressions, and he has improved a bit--but he is very quick to rush through 1 and 2 and checkdown--that is a lack of confidence in his ability to read the defense.  I had a former NFL TE (Deems Maye) who played QB in high school (not sure about college) tell me that the best QBs read the defense by knowing where everyone will be when the ball is to arrive--not where they are.  I think his QB at the time was Humphries.  He said that Humphries would throw the ball into coverage before the cuts etc.  because he understood DB momentum, zone areas, etc.  and he could just see it.  Said so when people say nobody was open, they are usually right because nobody should be "open" when the QB has the ball--when the ball arrives, everyone should be open.  He said Humphries was never "great" but his skills were limited--from a small school--but his ability to read a defense made him never give up on a route.
