Another trade idea

The constant receiver talk has made me think about something. Assuming the Steelers put the first-round protection on Mike Wallace--which looks likely right now--would Carolina be able to trade back in the first round and then use that first round pick to pry Wallace away from Pittsburgh? Is it even legal? If so, I like the idea of getting a first and second from the late teens or early twenties and then using that second to grab a corner or defensive tackle.

I know a lot of people are philosophically opposed to using a draft pick on a receiver, and I'm in that camp myself, actually. But pairing Cam with a young, dominant Pro Bowler for the rest of their careers...it's enticing, right? For anyone doubting that Mike Wallace is worth the pick, check out the link below. Yeah sounds like a plan. But that's if they place the first round tender on him to protect him. I think they'll clear enough cap space to resign him. Heard they already restructured polamalu and rothelisberger. But this would be awesome

Not only would you have to give up the pick, but you would have to sign him to a VERY big contract.

Ya know, all the trade speculation gets crazy leading up to the draft, but then again, the draft is about all there is to talk about this time of the year.

But, this is actually not the craziest thing I've ever heard. I doubt we'd trade back, then trade again using that pick to get Wallace. That's just too much. Trades are hard to hammer out, much less two in one day. A more likely scenario, IMO would be us trading #9 to the Steelers for their 1st rounder (#24 overall) and Wallace. The reason I think it could be a potential outcome is that the Panthers have to be thinking about a true #1 WR to take over for Smitty someday, not to mention that Smitty has been talking for the last couple of years now about how he's ready to pass on that mantle to someone else in terms of carrying the load of the passing attack. Word is that the Steelers want to go back to their old smash mouth style of football and if that's the case, they could definitely look to move Wallace instead of give him a big deal. They may have the best WR corps in the NFL which won't do them a ton of good if they're planning on playing smash mouth football. So, if the Steelers fall in love with a guy who they don't think will make it to them (IMO, Dontari Poe is the best bet due to their need of a 3-4 DT and the difficulty of finding a guy who potentially fits that role), I could see something like this getting floated out there.

Talking about blowing the top off of defenses... pairing Smitty with a burner like Mike Wallace, then having guys like LaFell and Olsen working the underneath, not to mention DeAngelo and J.Stew pounding the rock... probably a pipe dream, but damn if it doesn't sound enticing.

It would definitely be interesting to see if we can somehow leverage our first pick for an already established player while keeping a first rounder. Its a scenario that's not out of the equation.

I saw somewhere that the steelers have already restructured like 5 players trying to make room to sign Wallace. They wouldn't do that if they had any idea of trading him

The issue in Pittsburgh is their salary situation. Franchising him puts them over the cap, they don't have the room to sign him to a long-term deal yet, so he's hanging out as an unrestricted free agent. The maximum protection they can put on him is a first-round pick, which keeps him on the team for about two and a half million dollars this season. And the name you're looking for is Limas Sweed.
