Potential Draft Day Trade?

Marty Hurney certainly loves to trade on draft day.

I don't put much stock into him trading up to go higher than 9, honestly, though I'll grant anything can happen.

Trading down in round one or up in round two, those things strike me as more likely based on history.

Here's some recent reports coming out of Cleveland:

John Czarnecki of FoxSports.com reports the Browns have been showing “weird, uninterested signals” in the pick. Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com reports that Washington, Miami and Seattle have shown more interest in trading up for Robert Griffin III.

We’re not sure this means a lot at this point. Perhaps the Browns really would prefer to go after Matt Flynn in free agency. Or perhaps they just don’t want to show their intentions this early in the process, which makes a lot more sense.

And as of today, there's this report:

“I was equally impressed with Ryan,” Shurmur said. “Very intelligent young man. Did a nice job in the interview. It’s important in the interview that they’re able to talk about what they did when we watch their film, and I thought he did a very nice job of that. He was very productive this year after being a receiver. He played receiver for 30 games and quarterback for 21. That’s not always easy to do.”

If the Browns are considering taking Tannehill with the fourth overall pick, then they’re a lot higher on him than anyone realizes. And if the Browns are a lot higher on Tannehill than anyone realizes, Shurmur probably wouldn’t be talking up the Browns’ interest.

I think that it's definitely becoming more and more likely that we could trade that 9th pick and move down to 22nd.

Also, the move would make sense out of why we're very interested in Janoris Jenkins. At 22nd, I'm sure he could still be there. The Cowboys are the other team that desperately need a CB, and they could easily take Dre Kirkpatrick at 14, leaving Janoris Jenkins to us at the end of the 1st.

Why

Why

Why would anyone want to pick the Panthers to trade with? Only, Only, Only because they think Buffalo is gonna get their man. Otherwise, they keep waiting until like the 11th pick to trade right in front of Seattle to get their QB.

Lots of scenarios just say, X team comes up to get X player. They generally disregard the whole process and just figure because the Panthers are great guys or something that other teams just naturally want to give up draft picks to us, even though they could wait a few more picks to move up and give up less.

Keep in mind that we are in front of Buffalo, that is key to most scenarios.

I've thought about it, and here's why: Kansas City has reportedly been looking for a QB, especially targeting guys in the Draft. At 11, I doubt they would trade out of that place to give up a chance to take Tannehill.

Also, there's the chance that a team like Seattle could move up in front of the 11 pick to take Tannehill, in fears that Kansas City will draft a QB, which will cause a logjam between 8-12, for teams deciding whether or not to trade the pick for Tannehill or to take Tannehill or to take someone else.

There's even a chance that Buffalo could take a player like Tannehill, especially after the horrible performance Fitz had after he signed his contract performance last year. (I don't think they will, but they easily could.)

So, if you were Cleveland, and you're sitting there at 22. The Dolphins come up and select someone (I think it'll be Justin Blackmon). Cleveland knows that moving up to 8 will cost more than moving up to 9, and Miami won't take a QB they will probably just have signed Matt Flynn. So, at 9 you have the Panthers, who won't take a QB, but Buffalo might take a QB. And if you wait any longer, Kansas City or Seattle will most definitely take Tannehill. So, do you wait around and hope that Tannehill isn't drafted by the Bills, or do you move up to 9 and grab Tannehill before anyone else?

Under the new CBA with the cost or lack there of, the "trade chart" becomes archaic according to draft analysts. So it then becomes a question for each individual club to answer for themselves. Is this worth it?

Exactly, and even if Cleveland does trade their picks, it's almost like they're not trading their picks, they're trading Atlanta's. For example, if Cleveland gave up a 1st, 2nd, and 4th pick this year to move up to #9, they would really only be giving up their 2nd and Atlanta's 1st and 4th, which would make it stomach the trade.

That's why I think Cleveland is the most possible draft trade partner, they are playing with House money, and will still have the top picks in all but the 2nd round.

I would love that. That makes the #22 a great option, and almost makes anyone at that pick worth the selection. :) Allows us so much more flexibility to do the things we want to do. Pull the trigger for sure.

Okay, at least you have reasoning for your trade scenario. I would think that they would target Buffalo instead of the Panthers just because I cannot see a Tannehill possibility being better than a Fitzpatrick reality and could not see Buffalo as a viable team to pick a QB. They need OLB and OT.

But at least you have a reason.
