Ruff's Post-Combine Mock Draft

1. Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

The pick is obviously a knee-jerk reaction to the Combine, but I think the guy has earned it. I had Michael Brockers pegged here pre-Combine, especially after his stock began to rise, but I think that Poe really showed him up at the Combine. He’s fast, he’s strong, and he could really help us at the NT. Ron Edwards coming back could be a huge boon for the guy, giving Poe a teacher, as well as someone he can rotate with initially so that he won’t wear out so easily.

2. Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

I wish that Janoris Jenkins would still be here at this pick, but I doubt he will. I assume that the Patriots with take Jenkins, especially after having to resort to Julian Edelman as a CB in the post-season last year. I had Chase Minnifield here in my last mock, and I think that he will still be here post his workouts. He’s only 5’10, but he’s lean, he’s good in coverage, and he’s well taught (his father was a Pro Bowl CB in the NFL). Some people have said that Minnifield is similar to Asante Samuel, and if so, that could work out great in our blitzing system.

4. Terrell Manning, OLB, NC State

With Thomas Davis hurting, we obviously need another LB. I think that Jordan Senn made enough of a case to be considered the starter going into next season, but I think that Hurney and Rivera both know they need to grab an OLB in the draft to add to special teams depth, as well as providing someone who can eventually be a quality starter in the NFL. Terrell Manning is 6’2, 237lbs, Thomas Davis is 6’0, 240lbs, so there obviously are similarities. Terrell did run a 4.8 40yard dash, showing that he isn’t NFL star quality yet, but, he will be well worth a 4th round pick, especially on a team that needs depth everywhere.

4. Joe Adams, WR/OW, Arkansas

A few years ago, Dexter McCluster was asked what position he expected to play in the NFL. McCluster said that he was an “OW” or, “an offensive weapon”. I think that Adams is cut from that same mold. He’s an incredible punt returner (something we’ve lacked since Steve Smith became a Pro Bowl receiver), he’s a fast, small receiver, and could be hellacious in the slot beside of Steve Smith, Brandon LaFell, and David Gettis. He can also line up in the backfield, and be the type of ‘scatback’ that Rivera is looking for. I believe Hurney makes a move into the either upper part of the 4th round or the lower, but in the process he grabs Joe Adams, which fills an immediate need on Special Teams.

5. Traded

I believe this pick will be a part of the Joe Adams/4th round deal.

6. Russell Wilson, QB, Wisconsin

I don’t know if Derek Anderson will be back, and I think Pickles will be off the team next season, so that leaves a hole to be filled in the late rounds. Russell Wilson is cut from the same mold as RGIII, he’s only shorter, which drops him into the late rounds. He had a fantastic season at Wisconsin, and played very well at NC State before he graduated. Drafting Russell Wilson will allow the back-up QB to be similar to the starting QB, so that whenever Wilson has to step in, the offense doesn’t change at all.

7. Drew Butler, P, Georgia

We need a punter, especially after the decline of Jason Baker. I wish this pick was Quinn Sharp from OK State, but sadly, he didn’t declare. Drew Butler is still a good option, averaging over 44 yards per punt.

Poe was second team all conference in Conf USA. He is said to have taken a lot of plays off. The combine had me thinking the same way, but he sounds like a phenomenal workout warrior to me.

Minnefield is a great pick. Very smart player, and we need smart in our secondary in a bad way.

Manning is another pick who is probably a result of a decent combine. Needed another year in college.

Open mineded here-thanks for the ideas. Just my initial reactions.

I like most of this draft. Except the Poe move. I like Poe, I knew he would have his stock rise, but not this much. He'd be a great 2nd round prospect, but he's not a 1st round prospect in my mind. Before the combine he was at least a 4th rounder. Now he's a 1st round talent? I don't think so. He's definitely a 1-2 round talent. LATE 1st round, not TOP 10 pick. Not in my eyes at least.

Chase is one of my fave CB's in this draft. He could definitely be there in the 2nd round. The rest of the mock is kinda meh.
