What is the best way to improve our pass rush?

I hear alot of posters say Hardy and CJ are fine and that may be true but we tied with 8 other teams with 2 sacks per game. While we have many needs the biggest need in my opinion is improving our pass rush.Even Rivera stated:"You have to have a pass rush," Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said earlier in the week. "You've got to be able to put pressure on the quarterback."

Options:

Draft a DE or OLB tweener but who? Most of the pass rushers are tweeners or fit a 3-4

Draft at DT that can get the push...I see good DTs but to get the push we need ?....Plus we we forfiet our investment in McClain or move him to a reserve

Sign a stud FA which I doubt we have the money to do.

Move to a blitzing scheme

Thoughts?????

Some of it will be handled with Edwards returned and the rest could be handled bringing a DT that can penetrate in a 1 gap, getting our linebackers healthy and shoring up the second corner position.

Part of the reason the pass rush lacked punch last year was that we had to play soft because we had one true linebacker and the secondary outside of Gamble sucked. This defense is predicated on attacking the ball stopping the run on first and second down and forcing the offense into third and longs and then blitzing.

With the guys coming back this year off IR, upgrades at free safety, Hogan having a good year and figuring out what to do at DT we will be better. There isn't one thing or a quick fix for the problem.

I think finding guys who can play at a high level at DE is easier than DT. At least if going draft and looking at young guys. So from a pass rushing aspect....I think the best way to improve the pass rush is to upgrade at DE. Work in some blitzes up the middle to aid w/ the push when needed.

That is assuming everyone is healthy next year (minus Davis).

IMO, it's improving the interior DL. It spoke volumes IMO that our DT play improved dramatically when we put the rookies on IR and inserted some journeymen.

CJ is a helluva DE and Hardy's stats didn't properly convey the type of pressure he was getting.

I agree but do not feel from what I have seen of Brockers he is another work in progress...I dont see him making an imediate impact,I see him as an upgrade but not an impact pass rusher

I'm not sold on Brockers either. In fact, I'd rather have Cox or Poe at this point.

However, a DT doesn't only impact the pass rush by rushing the passer himself. If a guy can demand a double team, he'll open up opportunities for others. It's why a lot of really good DTs don't necessarily put up great stats themselves. It's the attention they're demanding that is opening up the opportunity for others to make plays.

coaches doing their job and coaching up talent.. I really doubt anyone will present a quick fix.

There wasn't much talent to be had at the DT position last year. A couple of rookie 3rd rounders, one of whom was considered a pretty big reach, and a bunch of journeymen FAs. Our DT play improved considerably once we went with the journeymen FAs.

the team has a lot of pass rushers.

Get a defensive tack that commands a double team, and our pass rush instantly improves.
