Why is there no MLB team in the Carolinas?

You people are aligning yourselves with Atlanta Falcon fans.

:puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke:

Before the fairly recent creation of the Marlins and Rays and movement of the Expos, the Braves were the only team representing the entire Southeastern US, from Louisiana up to Kentucky and as far east as the Carolina coast.

Add to it the fact that when TBS Superstation still existed, Braves games were broadcast over cable nationwide.

Simply put, if you thought the amount of maroon in the BOA stands at this year's Redskins game was bad, it would be 10x worse if the Braves ever came to town. Same goes for the Yankees, Red Sox, and Cubs.

On top of that, as mentioned before, there's no market in the Carolinas large enough to accomodate a MLB team. Heck, if the Bobcats aren't going to ever be competitive, I'd rather Charlotte just become a Panthers-centric market. That idea has worked for the Canes in Raleigh, but their advantage was in exposing a market to a completely new sport, whereas the Panthers and this prospective MLB team would have to overcome those fans in this market that already follow a sport via another team.

I'm sick of Charlotte trying to become another Atlanta...

Charlotte isn't big enough to support MLB. The Triangle, maybe, but lots of people would have to commute. Oddly, Atlanta has terrible attendence yet the Braves will never leave.

Atlanta's attendance numbers are not terrible. They are in the top half of of MLB in attendance. They aren't as good as they were in the 90's but they are certainly not terrible.

I love MLB but just dont see it happening. Minor league is just right and i do also thing MLS is here. If i had copius amounts extra to invest i would spend it on that. Retro fit Muncipal stadium and redevelop that area and ride off ino the sunset.

Memorial?

If Memorial is torn down, it will not be rebuilt with a sports venue. CPCC owns that land and it is desperately needed for classroom expansion.

I would actually argue that that area is already redeveloped pretty well. CPCC & Presbyterian have built new buildings throughout that area and Elizabeth Avenue has seen a lot of new construction (although the master plan was put on hold when the economy died) and the streetcar will run through there eventually.

Charlotte is the biggest CITY in NC or all the Carolinas for that matter. How is the Triangle more of an adequate place for a baseball team? Oh because they suck and need more things to do in Raleigh, that's what I forgot about. LOL

Anyway, Baseball sucks. About the only good thing about baseball is that you can get wasted while you watch it in a stadium. Personally, I can't sit down and watch baseball on TV. Just not cup of tea.

I remember reading an article about the Capitol City Bombers. (Minor League team) about how some people felt they were basically pushed out of Columbia by college football. The article basically said the people that made decisions all had ties to the Gamecocks and wouldn’t allow them to get any bigger.

lol I had a buddy tell me that too...in 1980.

Not to take this thread into a soccer direction but...

There is a reason so many major Networks have been trying to get MLS programming rights. NBC will be showing 45 matches a year and paid $30M to MLS to do so (3 year contract). Fox just paid $1.2 Billion (B-B-B... Billion with a B) to show the World Cup in 2018 and 2022. They know there is money to be made.

I am not a soccer fan at all but it already averages more attendance than NHL and the NBA and it's hard to ignore it's growing popularity. Could have something to do with the cultural and ethnic shift of the country (PC term for illegals) for all I know, but it is growing.
