People are paying way too much attention to the combine

People aren't talking about diamonds in the rough that might be going from undrafted to drafted because of their combines or from a late-round pick to a second-day pick. No, we're talking about players we're already familiar with, first-round picks. When we pick someone else that isn't Dontari Poe, I promise you there are going to be shrieks of anger from people that take the combine so so seriously now when they wouldn't have put much stock into it at all before it started being televised.

Ah, I see what you mean. Let them Rage on man.

Fact: If Marty Hurney had drafted with combine results as his #1 criteria, he would have picked Julio Jones last year, Cam would have been tearing it up with some other team, and Jimmy Clausen would still be our QB.

Same fact: Marty hurney would have pulled the trigger on Aaron Rodgers. We'd have a super bowl already.

We can play this game too man. Also, these aren't facts, they're theories...

What are you talking about? Are you saying Thomas Davis didn't have a killer combine? Looks pretty dominant to me: http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=10608&draftyear=2005&genpos=FS

TD also was known for having a high football IQ, high aggression, intangibles, and he played in the best conference in America. So combine stuff is great AS LONG AS it's matched up with the things I talked about in my earlier post and as long as you take into account their play in college and their competition. Throw it all into a stew.

I think you're taking this too seriously... I was talking about the what if game you're trying to pass off as "fact" that's totally asinine. -___-

Also, I was agreeing with you about people raging if we don't take poe. To be honest he seems to fit the bill for our biggest need. But in the end we won't have final say though. Hurney and Rivera will. I trust their judgement over any of ours, that's why they get paid the monies.

The combine levels the playing field and allows players to compete side by side regardless of experience or conference. So what we find is that Poe for example is more athletic than just about every DT in the draft. Should that count for everything? Of course not but if you had some indecision about Poe because he is 350 lbs or wonder whether he is strong enough or has enough explosiveness to get penetratiion at the next level while holding his own, now you don't have to worry. For guys like Poe and Brockers who are underclassmen and somewhat projects you have to know whether they have the athleticism and natural abiility to blossom into a starter. The combine is a great place to find out. Add in the interviews and you get a great sense of what you have.

The combine is very important and some folks seem to place too little on the results. Otherwise every coach and GM wouldn't be there and they are.

Remember that Newton didn't throw that well but his running,. lifting, and interviews were all very good. I would think with guys like Luck and RGIII not throwing, the combine isn't as good for QBs as other positions. But for D linemen, it is great.

Dontari Poe this, Travis Benjamin that. You know who else drafted with combine results as his #1 criteria?

Give me intangibles, leadership, and a killer Jon Beason/#89 instinct over combine results all day.

No offense SMF but this is oldddd news. Look what the falcons gave up for julio jones. He moved up about 20 spots in the draft just from being a combine standout.

How is any of that fact? That's all opinion.

Fact might be that Cam had some overthrows or something at the combine, but anything beyond that is opinion.

For all we know, it was the interviews at the combine that won the Panthers over to Cam to the point where they didn't care if he had some problems with his throwing drills.
