Chargers Plan To Release Luis Castillo

He's younger than Edwards. Has better stats as well.

Agree. People forget that the Chargers, 2 years ago, had the #1 ranked defense. Taking a few salvage parts to get us over the hump is not a bad idea if we can get them to a decent contract. A new scheme and familiar coach could be good for Castillo--he was a first rounder.

What cracks me up is this: People treat free agents as if we have to bring them in here for five years, but they treat draft picks as if next season is the only one that matters. Free agents fill holes for next season--draft picks really do not ripen for at least a year or two.

Everybody wants to draft a DT--we have 3 rookies who had no camp last year (McCalin, Fua, and Kearse). We get Edwards back, Neblett, and Shirley played well down the stretch. Give them time.

Agreed with everything you said MHS, EXCEPT - Even camp wouldn't have helped Fua. Probably not McClain either.

They were horrible. We'll see how they turn out this year, but I expect McClain to be a good rotational guy, situational pass rusher from the middle. As for Fua, I think he'll have a hard time sticking.

that's why our fanbase is overall a joke. we must enlighten them or fear having to listen to them.. and the latter isn't an option.

you're right.. but that holds no relevancy to their ceiling.. not only would camp have had little effect (hypothetically), the 2nd year might only show a small jump.. NFL caliber DT's take time, not just one offseason.

there is no doubt they shown flashes. people should address that most of all.. time will tell the rest.

Yeah, I know. I was not a DT fan at all. WHen less than 50% of first round DTs drafted pan out, it is hard to expect 2 third rounders to be solid. Still, I look at Kearse, Shirley, Edwards, and Possibly Neblett as potentially decent. I pray that one of the McClain/Fua materializes. AND DT is deep this year.

This is a direct result of Marty Hurney not addressing the DT position properly since we lost Jenkins. We never know what we have. I am basing a lot on RR's end of season presser, when he said he didn't necessarily see DT as a need as he once did, or something to that effect.

I guess it is safe to say this: I just do not see a solid plan at DT. I think that is what confuses people. I can see having to bring in 1 rookie DT, and I think that was the plan until Edwards was hurt, but bringing in Edwards was a result of not having addressed DT since Jenkins became a Jet.

For 3-4 years I screamed DT in the draft--I think he came through with Hayden and found Neblett on the scrap heap. Louis Leonard, Tank Tyler---Jeez.

Kearse and Shirley did OK--how good can they be? I have no idea.

Agreed completely. DT seems like one of the hardest positions to adjust to in transitioning from college to the pros. But still, there wasn't much to look at for our two 3rd rounders last year.

I was actually more intrigued, excited by Shirley and Kearse FWIW. We'll see how it pans out this year though.
