If we want a NT- look no further than Dontari Poe

a better DT?

There are lots of DTs who can run faster and bench more that aren't as good as others on a field. For example, Poe did not play better at his position in 2011 than Brockers.

I am saying Hurney nor other GMs go gaga over combine workouts. Poe isn't going to rocket up and now be the best DT to those guys b/c he physically does well in those tests....they care more about how he plays DT. Same reason Cam kept climbing up Carolina's board despite a poor combine performane....Hurney and company cared about how he played QB.

a better DT doesn't mean poo. Neither of these players are worth anything in the NFL right now. You're supposed to draft players that have the greatest potential/physique/experience. Both of these players are going to be raw. There are no stud DTs in this year's draft no matter who you put at number 1. I don't see what makes Brockers look like he has more potential besides playing against better opponents for one season. They're both noobs. Why not go for the faster, bigger, stronger, more experienced noob?

yeah, being a better football player at your position matters. Lots of guys can test well in the combine in those drills that have never played a down of football.

You are suppose to draft the best players and those w/ the most potential. A killer 40 time for a DT is far down of the list of what you really should care about. I am not a fan of the Al Davis School of Drafting.

Question. Who was better last year at DT? What were Poe's weaknesses last year, what were Brockers (that isn't a combine question). Considering Poe's competition, he should of been better if he was a stud DT.

The correct answer could be that neither of them are worth our pick. This was the widely held position that was held at the end of the season when people were still focussed on actual football. Now the hype is moving these guys up the board and people are forgetting.

Fortunately, Hurney and Rivera will look at this with level heads.

Second round? Mayock and most others had him as the #1 DT above Brockers.

actually in his updated pre-combine mock he had them ranked

1) brockers

2) worthy

3) poe

4) still

5) tie cox/reyes/thompson

right now if i had to guess his rankings would be

1) poe

2) cox

3) brockers/still

4) still/brockers

5) worthy

I did see Poe play this year as I am ECU alum and actually watch C-USA games.

People have to keep in mind that Poe is a junior and Brockers is a redshirt sophomore. Neither guy is going to come in and dominate right away. If you pick either one of them you have to take the time to develop them and teach them how to play at the NFL level.

For that matter, rookie DTs not named Suh don't come in and dominate their first year. Both of these guys are projects to a point.

What I like about Poe is that he really is a Kris Jenkins kind of guy who was dominant for us when he tried. Poe being a workout wonder is a great thing given we had to pay Jenkins to work out and he still didn't do it. Poe seems like that won't be a problem for him at all. He seems hungry and wanting to prove himself.

Brockers would also be a great pickup given his wingspan, ability to build more muscle and develop as he continues to mature and grow.

People expecting any defensive linemen to come in dominate this year are going to be very disappointed. But if they are looking for us to draft a guy who will be a beast for us in the future and a rotational guy right now, then Poe and Brockers would both be great.

As for why haven't we heard about Poe this year, remember that the combine is designed to put everyone on the same playing field for comparison purposes. It lets a guy like Poe who played on a crappy Memphis team to compete with Brockers who got much more press. Seems a few years ago another C-USA player, Chris Johnson, came into the combine and blew it up. He showed he could compete with the big boys. Poe just made his case today.
