The NBA Dunk contest should have been discontinued..

After Vince Carter's performance when he won it. When he turned to the camera and said "It's over" I didn't realize he was talking about the dunk contest ever being exciting again :(

Still the most jaw dropping performance in the dunk contest's history.

To be fair, Budinger did it first.

Budinger dunked over another person first, which Paul George then copied. But Williams jumped over the motorcycle before Budinger did a similar dunk, iirc.

The problem isn't the players who are there, it's the players who aren't there. LeBron, Griffin, Howard, etc. For whatever reason they won't participate. Apparently in LeBron's case it's greed and he wants more compensation. Howard already competed several times, perhaps he's just out of ideas. I was disappointed Griffin didn't return to defend his title.

If the best players were involved, there would be more hype around the event. I think some of the players are just scared to participate because then they'll further be measured up to Michael Jordan. Kobe is not that great of an athlete and relies on skill mostly, but he participated in the dunk contest when he was a younger lankier player and even won it (i think). No reason a strong and tall athlete like LeBron dodges the event. If he just would do some of the dunks he did in the all-star game, people would be satisfied.

There's also been a lack of the surprise dunker. We haven't had the Desmond Mason, Jason Richardson, Nate Robinson type recently. Jeremy Evans was a huge disappointment.
