FTP Server

All you IT gurus... we're in need of a new FTP server. Had one for about 5 years now... it's on it's last legs me thinks...

Taking suggestions... the purpose of the server is for us to put data up on here at our office for the other offices to pull down, and somewhat for us to deliver data to clients, but that is a much smaller application with the file sizes being typically less than 1GB total. The inter-office stuff can range from small files to 50+GB uploads.

I'm looking at something like this for this purpose...

Our current server runs Linux Open SUSE I think... but I'm not super familiar with Linux, I can get around in it, but it's kind of a pain and I didn't set up the current server. Thinking of going to a Windows based server...

Enlighten me please. :D

I know... and I can get around in it... but I'm not the only one here that will have to deal with it.

I ran several SGI Irix systems back in the day... say 1996-2001... but that's a LONG time ago.

I can do some basic stuff, the other day we had an issue with the drives, and I had to get in there and run fsck and fiddle with the fstab to get it to boot correctly again, but it's a pain in the ass...

Windows may not be the way to go... idk, that's why I asked... my main concern at this point is the hardware though.

You could use an old office PC and it'd work fine. Unless you have hundreds or even thousands of connections your bottleneck is going to be bandwidth, even with a fiber connection. Spending a couple grand on a server for this is like buying an F350 to haul a bag of sand.

I'm a developer not a sys admin so I can't speak with absolute confidence though. fwiw

Well that's basically what we have now... an old PC that was serviced into a server by adding some drives and making it into an ftp server...

I have a rack in the back room with the router, switch, fiber box and network cables, and I'd like to get rid of the clutter by adding a rack mount server. That's what I was shooting for anyway...

Then you're fine getting the one you selected. If reliability is an issue you'll want to set up RAID mirroring. It'll cut the storage space in 1/2 but you'll have a duplicate disk if one fails.

Yeah, bandwidth isn't an issue. We've got a fiber connection here, so that's not a problem. There's only 3 other offices so usually only one is connected at once... most of the bigger stuff is transferred over night.

I just want something reliable and pretty much invisible.

Is that when MCP is streaming pr0n?
