Panthers surprise Cuts and Restructures?

Depends on how Williams contract was done......after this year could make sense. Williams will be 30 going into that next season and Stew will need a new deal.

No reason to believe Stew will not get his money. The Panthers always find a way to take care of their own.

Wanting Stew to be an every down back, is, well, to be civil, not forward thinking. To me the only thing that would accomplish would be to shorten his career. Splitting carries is benefitial for the team as it keeps your RBs fresh and healthy. Which benifits the player as he gets to enjoy a long and productive career. Opposed to a short and productive career as the feature back?

DWill should remain an elite back for the forseeable future. (Precisely because the two back system and Stew helped prolong his career.) We have a few years before we need to address that situation.

With the success we are on the brink of achieving here in Charlotte. I see no reason that team players like Stew will find a way to remain a Panther. Or, I could quit letting my giddy do my thinking.

I just don't get the beef with having two outstanding RBs? Most teams, fans, players, and concessioaires love having two great RBs. Live with it. Or not.

My giddy is coming back. And GOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Seriously you don't have a leg to stand on. Go look at the play by play from our last 3 games for example. We used both backs very well and both were very effective. Your dislike for Williams contract blinds you from the reality that he ran very well the 2nd half of the season and had a good number of effective runs. At this point we have less than 15 million a year (counting Newton) invested in a running game that was third in the league and accounted for well over 2000 yards. Hindsight shows this was a good move and well worth the money. When Stewart gets paid next year (2013) we will still have less than 20 million invested between the 3 of them which is no more than Brees will get by himself. Saying the same thing 100 times doesn't make it true.

I have zero dislike for Williams......he is just a luxury that will cost this TEAM going forward.

And again, just like the first half of the season he had too many runs of 2 yards or less. Facts are facts and half his touches resulted in those runs. In fact over the last 8 games he had a smaller % of runs of 5+ yard runs vs the first half. The home runs for TDs have a way of hiding all that. You don't pay RBs and invest in them like we possibly could in the future for them to be role players....not in this passing era.

Stewart was the better RB overall. Stewart fits the scheme better. Stewart has more potential going forward. Newton and Stewart plus a cheap role player is more than enough for our ground attack. You can try to spin that as Williams hate.....but it isn't. in today's NFL....Williams contract with our situation just didn't make sense. Hindsight with what Cam brings just makes it more clear.

The issue is how it impacts us AFTER next season keeping both...

At the half way point of the season everyone was griping about the lack of a running game. Second half of the season we were beastly (Pi to whomever coined it.) on the ground. It was a total team effort in both the failure and subsequent success of the running game.

IMO, once the light went off in Chuds' head, we were a different offense. I don't want to use the word finese, probably cuz I can't spell it, but that is as close to backyard as I can get. You go this way, you go that way, you go behind him, you go over there kinda stuff. I guess if you have weapons you go ahead and use them. Either as targets or decoys.

Hey, I may be a homer but I ain't dum. That said, even I know you can not let casual fans get to you. You know the ones. The Edwards is on the verge of greatness and DWill, who is declining rapidly, is holding him back crowd? This is total haha. Thanks. Having the ability to paraphrase is my interwebz right.

It is just goes against all that is football. Two backs, practically interchangable. With similar stats, using dissimilar styles. Both unique in just the right ways. Glad we have em both. And I am happy in the thought that they will probably both be Panthers for life.

Going off the second half of last year. A full offseason of work and study. OTAs and training camp. With the infusion of a top flight draft class. And just maybe a FA or two thrown in for good measure. We are going to be a force to be reckoned with for a long time to come.

My giddy can't wait another six months. And GOOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and if Stewart gets his we have will have too much invested into our RBs......we will be paying a 30 yr old RB and that money could of been used better elsewhere.

Again, after next season Williams will be 30..... assuming he will be elite for years to come is wishful thinking.

If you are playing Foxball and dont have Newton I would be all about over investing in the RB position. We have a two back system essentially with Newton and Stewart.

Both had some terrible games...but again, makes you wonder if the game-plan/scheme needed time to evolve. By the end of the year both backs were turning in good performances. Some of their worst games were in the first four games.

Williams and Stewart were actually pretty consistent in what they did if you look into it. Stewart was more consistent.........Williams was more boom or bust. Scheme had a big part in that.....in that Stewart fit what Chud wants to do. Williams not to the same degree.

Much smarter men who are paid by NFL teams questioned what Carolina did with Williams so I am not the first to bring it up...

We don't have two quality RBs, we have three. Cam and Stew aren't going anywhere. Cam is Cam. If Stew goes, so does half of Chud's playbook. Who's the odd man out?

It may not happen this season, but it will happen.

I am hoping they don't use Cam as much running the ball this year. We need to reduce the number of hits he takes, since he is hopefully going to be our quarterback for the foreseeable future.

Was he paid a premium? Yes. Fault Hurney for paying guys well partly as a reward for past service when Williams made very little. Did he have to do it? No. But it is a reason that most players not named Peppers are happy to play here. Hurney takes care of his players and pays them well. Some teams players want to play for them and other players hate being there and can't wait to leave. The difference is how they are treated and taken care of. Williams was paid for his potential and for past service. It is a fault of our front office. Things could definitely be worse.

Things could be worse. It is nitpicking what is currently an okay situation.

Yes, Carolina does pay for what you have done after the fact. That type logic can be questioned.....many teams who consistently win don't practice that.

Plenty of examples can be found of how paying guys for what they did has hurt the team. None of that is the players fault.

I love CJ, but he is a luxury we do not need. Could have better spent that money. See what I did there? IF DWill was a 3rd stringer I may well argee that he makes too much money. Seeing as how he is a starting caliber NFL RB, his pay commencerates (sp) his performance.

Teams restructure. Teams finagle and wiggle around that cap. You do not jetison your stars at the first sign of a struggle. Of which, we as fans, are curiously left out of that loop. That mythical cap. The forborer of bad tidings. We are in uncharted waters around here. This franchise has Dynasty written all over it. Now that is pressure.

Even for a homer like me it is an exciting time to be a Panther fan. Ahh, the possibilities are endless. Cuts, signings, drafts, mini-camps, otas, training-camp. Lots a stuff gonna happen round these parts. All I want is a front row seat, cuz it is gon-b crazy up in here. Did I do that right?

My giddy be happy. And GOOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cam is safest as a runner and he runs smart.

In his early 20s it would be silly for him NOT to run. He converted more 3rd downs than any RB, he lead the NFL most of the year in TDs, he presents mismatches the league frankly has never faced before...

If he doesn't run....I don't see how he won't take steps backwards. It creates too many opportunities for others as well.

I was a big supporter of drafting Cam...didn't want them to draft him if they were going to try to turn him into just a passer early on in his career.

Lets wait and see if that is to much invested. And lets wait and see if those money could of been used better elsewhere. If Stew gets a contract like Williams our running attack will be close to 3000 yds 25 TDs for 20 mil a year.. I can live with that. In fact that is cheap for that kind of production.

No, I don't see what you did there....

CJ is the only starting caliber DL man on our roster....he plays every down except when hurt or tired.

Williams wasnt even the best RB on our roster this year. Majority of the time only one RB can be on the field at a time...and Williams gives them less options over Stewart when on the field.

CJ also is young and Williams is on the backside of his career.

Williams didn't even account for half our production on the ground this year......yards or TDs. Can't imply he will at 29, 30, 31 or 32...not with the other talent here.

Williams has been a great player on and off the field for Carolina...IMO that clouds judgement in Carolina. Both with ownership and the fans.

    • That’s better, I replied to a much earlier post. It’s still low end TE1 money but salaries go up every year. I’ll call it a slight overpay but I’m amazed at how many people thought 2-$16M was a good deal for our backup TE. I’m also amazed at how good Tremble is based on these posts versus what I watched. IMO, this is a meh move that doesn’t improve us at all. He’s just more of the same. We need to at some point start replacing current roster spots with better players. It’s another reminder that all we can do with day 2 and day 3 picks is get backups or forced starters (nobody better) at best.
