Panthers surprise Cuts and Restructures?

Wharton could be a candidate to be cut but given most of his money is salary, he won't be restructured. He did have a bad year but had a number of good ones, I suspect he will stay as he is really not that highly paid for a left guard. We could go with Schwartz or someone else but given all the injuries to Otah and Schwartz last year I doubt we will jump to do that. davis will be released or restructured and Smith should be extended. Guys like Otah won't be released unless we are sure he is not the answer given he is still on his rookie contract. I think we will cut some guys but for the most part they won't be big surprises.

Wharton is going to count almost 8M in 2012. Big #. But he still has a lot of value do to has versatile he is and given the fact we have Cam Newton behind center.

Would be a bold move but possible.

Also just think about how much money we have tied up in the RB position. I love both Stewart and Deangelo, but Stewart is absolutely the better every down RB. Deangelo is a great RB though in his own right, and is a homerun threat every time he touches the ball, but he constantly gets stopped at the line. I dont know if there is a way to pay both these guys and keep the defense competitive.

While some of his longer runs help his YPC, saying he "constantly gets stopped at the line" is ridiculous. All three of our primary ball-carriers have over 5.4 YPC averages. That right there with the top runners in the NFL with over 100 carries.

Williams did have a very large # of negative and 1-2 yard runs this year. Cam and Stewart were more consistant. Williams was more boom or bust overall on the year.

The terms "very large number of" and "consistently" simply aren't accurate in describing DeAngelo's rushing attempts resulting in a loss or short gain. I'm sure it happened more times than it did to Cam or Stew, but lets at least be accurate here. He's being described like an unproductive rusher who broke a couple long runs.

How is that inaccurate? He averaged 5 yards per carry so there was clear production. But his ypc average was achieved with different runs than the other runners.......he had more boom and bust to his game in 2011.

Saying he had more boom or bust as a runner vs. the other 2 isn't inaccurate.

Gross needs to be restructured... I think his cap # is around 10 million this year.

It is almost all salary so giving him a signing bonus and prorating it won't really do alot but givee us guaranteed money to be paid if we release him down the road. You could cut a couple of million this year but it would be tacked on next year or in 2014. If you want to keep for the next 3 seasons you are better just leaving it the way it is.

Did you watch the Panthers this past year? Stewart for the first half of the season especially looked light years ahead of Deangelo. Deangelo started turning it on late but he was never as consistantly dominating as Stewart was on each running play. I recall Deangelo getting stuffed at the line a ton, and Stewart consistantly getting 5 yards. Deangelo eventually as the season wore on would break some huge runs which brought his average up, but nobody who watched the Panthers last year could say with a straight face that Deangelo was better than JStew..

His salary will be 5,700,000 and the other 2,000,000 is signing bonus cost which we will have anyway. If we cut him the other 2,000,000 from next year escalates and we have a 4 million dead space cap hit anyway. So his cap hit to keep him versus cut him is really 3.7 million which isn't much given some of that would go to the guy you bring in to replace him or to backup the replacement if you use someone like Schwartz.

it would be bold and stupid IMO. If you want to get rid of him draft his replacement and season him and drop Wharton next year if he struggles again.

Anyone who thinks either Stewart or Williams would be cut seriously needs to get his brain checked. You probably also believe that "receiver" is the Panthers' biggest need.

There is no reason to keep Davis around.
