Hurney interview...

Jon Beason was one of the biggest need picks this franchise has made.

Was anyone confident going into 2007 that Dan Morgan would stay healthy all season long, not to mention stay healthy enough into the future to remain a cornerstone of the team?

I don't think many on this board were, and the Panthers weren't either. Remember that they reworked his deal before the draft in a way that paid out his bonus on a per game basis. It's pretty clear they were far from certain he'd stay healthy, as he in fact did not.

It was obvious to me before we picked, once all the safeties were off the board, that we were going to take either Beason or Paul Posluzny. Quite possibly we would have taken Beason even if one of the safeties still had been available.

There's no question Beason was a need pick, and a very good one.

So was Kalil, for that matter. The team knew Hartwig's groin injury meant he wasn't as effective as he had been, so they were looking for an upgrade. When Kalil was still there, it was a no brainer to take him (although to be honest it didn't seem that way to me at the time, as we didn't really know the extent of Hartwig's injury).

As others have said, it's often not that clear-cut whether a pick is a "need" or a "BPA" pick. I think fans make more out of this difference than really exists. Teams are going to pick players from positions they need. If they are in desperate need at one position, they might focus on it, if they could improve in several areas, they'll probably pick their favorite player from those positions.

BPA and "need" are not necessarily mutually exclusive, sometimes the coincide. But given the choice, as Fox has said many times, he'll take BPA over need every time. When there is a player sitting there, at any position that should never have fallen that far, you take that player instead of reaching down to fulfill a need you may be able to address after the draft with a free agent. It's just common sense...

its just some plays in the game..we wont change are entire scheme..i think it would be nice..that and some 3 TE sets

Yea, I know he didn't mean completely going to a new system. I just think it's kind of interesting that we are looking into that kind of stuff. I'd like to see some new looks on offense.

they played around with some fun stuff at TC last year and they have messed around with 2 TE sets for years there. not sure why it rarely sees the light of day in a real game, though.
