Hurney interview...

It's the dawn of the apocalypse, I agree with you. Stewart probably fell more on the needs side of the coin (not that it turned out we needed him more, but I think that's what the FO thought). I think Otah and Godfrey both happened to fall as both need and BPA, and Dan Connor was clearly a case of BPA.

I see JS as a BPA pick. He was a player that fits our scheme perfectly and was available.

I thought Otah was more need based as well as Godfrey.

I think they focus on BPA but limit themselves a bit based on need. Maybe 70/30 BPA/need. Of course sometimes BPA is allowed because the needs are so broad. When we get to a point where we are taken seriously and actually have back to back winning seasons we may shift more towards need and be more active in the wheelings and dealings. Conversely if we find ourselves with a coaching staff and GM on the hotseat because the sucked for a few years straight we may still look at BPA but be just as active like we were last year trading picks and snatching up veteran depth on bosth sides of the ball.

I guess I should have said....:D

If need and BPA coincide then that will happen. And I'm sure in the later rounds that's exactly what they do. (BPA)

honestly, its virtally impossible to differentiate between the two if you look at it past the surface. A case can almost always be made for both sides...just like everything else around here.

I disagree, they even had Beason slated to be OLB from the time they drafted him. While it's apparent now that MLB was a need, at the time that wasn't the consensus.

If you also look at the DJ, Kalil, Godfrey, Rosario, Shaw, Connor, and Barnidge picks over the past two years it's fairly evident that we subscribe heavily to the BPA philosophy. There are times we will go out and grab a player at a needed position (Davis, Stewart and Otah) generally we feel safer going after talent.

Safety was a need. Beason was drafted so he could play MLB when Morgan was cut loose, but he played OLB in the meantime.

We were still trying to groom Seward to be his replacement. Hindsight is 20/20 but I remember the vast majority of the people on this message board feeling LB wasn't a pressing need.

Just because he would eventually replace Morgan does not mean Beason was a need pick.

Godfrey is definitely up for debate, I will give you that.

Everyone I talked to about it thought it was a need, but In the end we don't know what the FO was thinking and it's all conjecture.

Dan Connor sure as hell wasn't a need pick, so to say that they only pick for need is rediculous. You could also argue that Stewart and Otah were the best available players where they were picked.

you would have to of been in a coma to think that we drafted Otah and Stewart because of BPA, they were need picks.

Now we used to do a lot of BPA picks, but recently they have been more Need then anything else.

Not so much with Stewart. Everybody knew that there were good RB's to be had in the second and third rounds. It just worked out that Stewart was a need, and the BPA for where he was picked.

Otah became a need pick after BPA for our offense presented itself in the form of JStew. Priorities change that quickly.
true, although OL was pretty much a huge need anyway.

picking up stewart just made it even more of a necessity.

yep. it was a "no-brainer" if you will. I lmao at those "mortgaging the future" threads until I finally had to take a couple weeks off from the huddle in the weeks that followed the draft.
