Is Antonio Garay a realistic FA target?

I'm sure Ron would love someone like him on the d-line, but is he truly realistic for us? I also found this interesting.

Garay is 32, and the Chargers are "optimistic they can retain (him) without breaking the bank." Garay may return on a low-cost, short-term deal, but he's obviously not a long-term solution. Backup Cam Thomas showed lots of promise as a situational run-stopper in 2011, and figures to see a bump in playing time. Feb 17 - 3:12 PM

We signed him last year. His name is Ron Edwards.

What those two brings to the table are more or less the same thing both on and off the field. I have no idea why people want him.

Garay can rush the passer better, plus him and Ron on the same line. Talk about a run defense.

Chargers NT Antonio Garay led all NFL defensive tackles in "pressure per snap" last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Garay had been an under-utilized journeyman behind Jamal Williams going into last season. He quickly emerged as a penetrating run stopper and pass rusher, disruptive in all phases of the game in his first year as a starter. Garay graded out as PFF's No. 2 overall nose tackle despite playing just half the snaps of No. 1 Kyle Williams

if they don't draft a DT in the first couple rounds he will probably be a very real possibility....that is if the chargers don't re-sign him. problem is the chargers said they were going to clean house this offseason or at least weren't going to make a push to re-sign a lot of players.

oh...and not picking him or another DT up because of the group of DTs we have right now? ugh.

    • If you think Smith's hating on McMillian or tall recievers you didn't watch the video. He may have been guilty of that in the past but he says outright that his problem is people see a tall reciever and tend to overlook everything else about him. He was complimentary and believes the guy will pan out. His only real criticism was comparing Tetairoa to himself actually, saying like he felt like he took plays off when he wasn't the primary target.
    • I loved this draft. I think we have 3 starters out our first three picks. Maybe they take a year to develop but I don’t see them taking long.    I think Etiene is going to be a good back up. He’s only 20 so he has a lot to improve on.  I think we will see him be used on special teams this year. He won’t get many reps unless an injury happens because we got two 1,000 yard rb in front of him. I could see Ransom starting but I think he will probably be a back up, maybe playing special teams? I think hes probably got the lowest ceiling of all our drafted players. Cam Jackson will be a back up, probably not a lot of snaps this year. Could end up being a solid player for us.   I love the Mitchell Evans pick. He’s got potential to be our top TE. He had two different injuries that set him back in college but I think if he was healthy he would have been one of the top TE in the draft. I have even more faith in him because ND makes great tight ends. I don’t know if he will play much this year unless an injury happens though. Probably just a blocking TE this year.
