JR4's Pre-Comine Mock

There is a lot of debate about what our 1st pick will be (as is the case every year) with a lot of people wanting Brockers or a CB or OL. I fall into the latter. As much as I would love some great DT prospect to be there when we pick there is not one. Brockers is at best raw potential and I have a problem using a top 10 pick on potential alone.

Before anyone says it there is a huge difference between Cam last year and Brockers this year. Cam had one of the most dominating seasons in college football history. Brockers had an average season. So I am being a realist I don't want us reaching for a need. If I had my way we would make a strong push for Jason Jones in FA to bring in one of the best interior pass rushers to our line and then address NT in the draft (or sign Garay or my ideal chose if the Lions don't RFA him is Sammie Lee Hill) so I am going into this mock with that assumption.

1st Pick: David Decastro RG

If we do trade back a little it would be hard not to pick Jenkins too as he might end up being one of the best cover corners in the draft. But when it come down to it you want a starter in the first round with big impact on the team. The game has been and always will, start in the trenches that's why I think even if we stay at 9 or trade back decastro has got to be the pick and I know we need alot of help on defense but you can't pass on him but if they do then it would have to be Jenkins. I just can't see picking a project in the top 10 that's not a su kinda guy or the the next sapp.

don't like getting an OG in the first round. not a fan of getting a NT when a UT is more needed either.

if we were intent on getting help for the oline in the draft and wanted/could trade back to get a 3rd, i'd rather use the first couple picks on defense and then take the second two and pick up silatolu in the third and schwartz in the 4th.

gotta say i just wouldn't be crazy about this draft. very meh....

One thing that I didn't see/Read is, how would the trade work out? I'm interested in knowing this..

I included it for if there was a willing partner for us to trade back from 8 to the 12-15 range.

Well I did make the caveat that we sign Jason Jones and he is a much better UT then anything available in this draft and your disapproval of a G is well documented. It is my opinion that I would rather have an elite G as a DT that is raw potential.

Interesting draft. I actually like it. Except that last pick. I think we needed a punter in that but hey, this was a rather interesting draft.

I don't really think the difference in talent between a 7th round P and an UDFA are worth using a pick on 1 but I have been saying a P has been a need for the past 2 years and yet we never brought anyone in. We should have gotten rid of Baker instead of Kasey last year and brought in a couple of strong leg P to handle both P and KO duties.

Taamu i think has the athletic ability to play 3 tech better than NT. he does get pushed at times, but he has light feet for a guy that size and can get good penetration/ push on pockets.

That was my 1st impression as well. I think he should play at the 320-325 lbs range and line up at UT but his size makes me think NT will be his final position in either scheme. Either way I think he and Brockers have similar upside and strengths but Taamu can be had a round later. BTW Rayzor the difference between DeCastro and Schwartz is about the difference between Cam and Kapernick last year. Where as the difference between Brockers and Taamu IMO is negligible.
