Panthers Add DE Tucker

only thing good about this is he played under Rivera's defense, other than that it's risky. i think he's too small to be a good DE unless they move to a 3-4

I have the feeling that we will run the 3-4 look more often next year then the 4-3, especially with Edwards coming back healthy, and I hope we retain Applewhite (I believe he is a FA), but if we do run the 3-4 more, what does that mean for TD? (if he is healthy enough to play and we keep him), I would believe Anderson and Beason ILB, Tucker and Applewhite OLB, i would think.

This is similar to when we brought in a bunch of offensive guards/tackles who had injury histories or were out of football looking for someone to stick. We ended up with Vincent. Seems we are doing the same thing at DE/DT looking for a few guys to step up. It costs us little to nothing and we might get lucky.

Going pretty far out in left field. Tucker and Applewhite being our OLBs when one is a DE who wasn't that effective as an OLB and the other wasn't even in football last year. Plus Edwards has worked primarily in a 4-3 instead of a 3-4.

Yeah I know, I'm just trying to guess what we are doing with the personnel that we our bringing in, with the personnel that we have. Also I thought Edwards was a NT in the KC def, the year before we picked him up.

Im not sure what defenses he was in but NT doesn't necessarily mean a 3-4. Most 4-3 defenses use an NT some use two some use none.

Pro Career: Veteran defensive tackle enters his fifth campaign with Kansas City in 2010 ... Has played in 64 consecutive games for the Chiefs, including 45 starts ... Joined the club as an unrestricted free agent from Buffalo in 2006 ... Switched back to the nose tackle position in 2009 as part of Kansas City’s move to the 3-4 defensive alignment, a system he has previously excelled in ... Recorded a career-high 4.0 sacks in 2004 ... Has played in 112 regular season games (70 starts) ... Owns 201 tackles (142 solo), 13.5 sacks (-73.5 yards), 43 QB pressures, three fumble recoveries with one TD, as well as four forced fumbles ... Has started one postseason contest.

This is what i came up with when i googled him, i thought he was a DT in 3-4, when we signed last year.

Edwards did play some 3-4 in 2009 and 2010 for KC. They ran a hybrid 3-4/4-3 similar to what Arizona ran in 2008. From 2006-2008 KC ran a 4-3. While he was in Buffalo they also ran a 3-4 for a few years and a 4-3 for a few as well. Both of those teams switch things around withh different coaching switches looking for the magic solution.

So the answer to your question is that yes he has played nose in a 3-4 but he is not really your quintessential 3-4 nose tackle. At 315 he is pretty big in a 4-3 but a little undersized in a 3-4 where guys like Ngata run 350 lbs and Pouha for the Jets is 325. There are exceptions like the just retired Chris Hoke for Pittssburgh who was only 305.

But Edwards is expected to still penetrate and get upfield in a 4-3 1 gap attacking scheme while most nose tackles in a 3-4 are simply there to clog things up and keep linemen and fullbacks off the MLB.

I think we are picking up guys who are versatile and can play in both schemes but I don't think we are going to a 3-4 base this year. Playing some 3-4 looks is very different that employing it as your base scheme.

He had the best defense in Chicago too.

He already has his elite offense, so as soon as he gets his defense put together this team is going to be really good.

I just hope that we can hit some draft gems this year because I think that they are having some difficulty concerning the salary cap and injuries so far.

Hurney needs to really have a discussion with Thomas Davis, Travelle Wharton and a few others and see if they can help give Rivera what he needs to make it happen.

If we are lucky, we can fill 2 starting positions on defense, and add a few guys here and there for nice depth. To be realistic, you cant really expect much better than that with one draft. So I am hoping that we can find one good solid FA to fill one of the positions that will be missed.

I really feel like he could improve our defense tremendously if he can get the tools he needs.

Um, to address the bold part. Last years draft was just one draft and it improved our team dramatically. I wasn't expecting a 6 win season. But Cam took care of that. So if they hit another home run in the defense we could improve again and if we improve by 3+ games we are in the playoffs.

The FA we bring in have to be on the defensive side of the ball. The offense can work the way it is. They will be a lot more dangerous with Gettis returning and with Cam having 2 years learning this system. With OTA's, mini camps, etc.

Also, I totally forgot he had a top D in Chitown too. Thanks for reminding me.
