great update on Ron Edwards

I'm going to be honest for a second. I don't know why everyone on this board overrated Edwards. I'd like to see a show a hands of people that have ever seen him play or even know who he was before last year. I hope he comes in and plays well like the next guy, but give me a break. He's on the wrong side of 30 and coming of a bad injury. Yet everyone talks about him like a savior. I'll hold of on that.

I'm not counting on him to do much and wouldn't be suprised if he is off the team before the season unless he comes back and looks dominate. We got some younger guys we should look at and we'll probably spend a high pick on a Dt. No sense on wasting time with him unless he comes back 100% and he's a significant improvement on what we have

He's very good in run support, PFF last year gave him a really positive grade in that area.

I am optimistic that Edwards is going to come back and play very well. Given he got a whole year to rest I expect he will be fully ready to go. The time off may help him extend his career.

yes clicheking i wouldn't be surprised to see our biggest FA acquisition on defense from 2011 cut in training camp either-unless he comes back and looks "dominate", that is.

he was a fan favorite in KC and the fact that he's a veteran with a very consistent track record means he's a poo ton better than anyone we have lining up at DT right now.

He will provide support in the run stopping, what the fug don't you get? We also need fuging veterans for these dt's to look up to,you can't just have a team full of young un-proven guys. More young guys leads to more mistames. We need balance of young guys and vets. We were the youngest team in 2010, and look where it got us. No where.

And solid on the field and fantastic mentor off the field is just what we need. you cant have a DT corps all wearing diapers like you suggest. He is great vs the run and has a lot of experience in both a 3-4 and a 4-3.

So he might not be an elite player but he is a solid player and fantastic mentor. On top on that he is a glue player and you need those on a good team.

There's no reason to cut him if he is healthy as the team needs a vet on the line. However, I wouldn't expect much from him as I didn't before the injury.

It is funny to me that we are talking about Edwards being over the hill, and a waste of money and he was drafted in the same draft as Steve Smith. I don't hear anyone talking about Smith being too old and needing to get dumped.

Edwards has been good for 10 years and had an injury which put him on IR. There is no reason to believe he won't come back or play well for us. In fact the year off is likely to help extend his career instead of shorten it.

I remember Hollis Thomas coming in here at age 35, after a serious injury, and doing a very good job for us in 2009 which the last year our defense was pretty good. It isn't like these guys have to run quick 40 yard dashes and everyone is worried about them losing a step. They stand there and stop folks from running them over. I would think you could still do that at the old age of 32 or 33.

Fwiw, Edwards doesn't have to be a superstar. He just has to be a solid dt, and that would be a dramatic improvement over what we had last year.
