Mayock hits all the Huddle sore spots; Luck vs. Newton, AJ, and Coples

I don't really think this thread has ANYTHING to do with whether Cam is polarizing. It has more to do with the fact that some people consider ANY criciticism that is made against a player (who happens to be black) is ALWAYS a racial attack.

Mayock's comment (whether you agree with his assessment or not) was NOT based on race.

Not sure people think "any" criticism of Cam is because of his race. Just the fact that he has been known for his amazing work ethic at both Blinn and Auburn yet that always seems to be the underlying worry for Cam. Doesn't make much sense. Either these guys are blazing fugging idiots or the are allowing certain stereotypes to permeate into their analysis. Certainly not on purpose. But it happens all the time.

When people question Coples work ethic they look at his on field performance and what his coaches have come out publicly and said.

Tony Pauline, draft expert for SI.com, said UNC coaches have been telling scouts Coples played cautiously his senior season to avoid getting hurt - a charge Coples denies. Coples said his production fell off initially because of his move to the right side, where he faced better offensive tackles, many of whom had help blocking Coples.

My only question (which has not been answered) is what was the criticism of Cam Newtons work ethic based on?

It really is amazing how polarizing Cam Newton is and this thread is just more proof of that.

He's not really that polarizing. You dont see people universally split on him. Its just one bitter demographic amongst fans and media. Having Cam as our QB has given us a mass appeal weve never had that a Luck wont. For every TRD and Mayock theres 20 Katies. Outside of his heritage and privileged background no one can explain what makes Luck so proven?

Cam had three questions about him coming out:

1. Will he be able to grasp and run a pro offense without spazzing out and running as soon as he got uncomfortable?

2. Would his accuracy be an issue?

3. Could he fix/improve his mechanics?

One is definitely answered. Three is mostly answered, his footwork goes nuts sometimes but he has shown a ton of improvement and a willingness to work on himself. Two is still up in the air a little as he gets really streaky and starts throwing 10 yards over everyone from time to time (and interlinks to a point with the issues with his mechanics).

Not sure where Mayock is getting his concerns about work ethic. That hasn't been a knock on Newton any where or any time.

I'd honestly bet it's less about racism and more about Mayock not liking Hollywood personalities. Cam is Deion reincarnated as a quarterback. You either love Deion or he irritates the living poo out of you - no middle ground.

Luck isn't the most talented guy on the field. Luck doesn't have the most talented players around him.

You couldn't say both of those about Cam in college.

That means Luck without much doubt has figured out how to work his tailoff and has a pretty strong football IQ. Doesn't mean Cam didn't coming out.......it just makes it easier to figure out with Luck.

Do even you watch college football?

You're saying that Cam had a better supporting cast at Auburn?

Toby Gerhart - Heisman Finalist

Coby Fleener - #2 TE in the NCAA

DeCastro - The best interior Lineman since Steve Htchinson'

Martin - #3 Ranked Tackle and Top 15 pick

and thats just on offense.

Cam won because he was better than anyone in the NCAA

Luck won bc he was a great QB in a great system surrounded by great players.

and there are some who can't put what was said last offseason behind them.

You do realize, of course, that what Mayock "said last offseason" he just DOUBLED-DOWN on THIS WEEK, right? Which is what this entire thread is all about?

What the heck do you mean put it "behind them" when he JUST SAID IT AGAIN?

Not sure I buy that since Harbaugh said that Luck was the best QB he had ever been around even when he was redshirting his freshman year.

Peyton Manning isn't the most talented guy on the field. He is a hellva QB. Big difference.

Cam Newton in college.....was the most talented guy when he stepped on the field. Cam Newton single handedly could take over a game. Talent around him, scheme, etc......didn't really matter. That actually is a rare thing. Cam Newton could run and throw and make an entire defense look silly. When an athlete is that gifted......it flat out can create an unknown about how hard he works (b/c frankly he doesn't have to work hard to embarass many).

I personally don't like Mayock. I believe he's an elitist snob. His shallow and judgemental attitude towards Cam only adds to my dislike.

Also, racism is not a figment of one's imagination. Stop acting as if someone has to use the "n" word for them to have their motives questioned. At last check racism is alive and well because one race still dominates and that is the race who dictates.

Simply stating the facts.

My wording was possibly poor or confusing.

You could only say ONE of those about Cam. You could say BOTH about Luck.

Cam was the best athlete when he stepped on the field each week in college. Neither, had a great cast.

The fact Cam was the best athlete when he stepped on the field and Luck isn't.........DOES impact how they are viewed/judged.
