Mayock hits all the Huddle sore spots; Luck vs. Newton, AJ, and Coples

This long story is just my way of saying you only hate Andrew Luck because you care so much for Cam. It's natural just embrace it. Hate Luck, The Golden Calf of Bristol and Andy Dalton with a clear conscious because that only shows you really like Cam. :p

Honestly, that isn't it at all. Well maybe a little after all the pot shots they threw Cam's way last season and now Luck is supposed to be the end all be all of QBs.

But to me it is more about the media driven hype around any player that may not deserve it. It happens almost every year. Whether it was SI putting Reggie Bush on the cover with the question "Is he the best RB prospect in history?" or the Luck slobberfest now.

I like Luck and think he can be a really, really good QB but I remember watching Peyton at Tennessee and Luck is no Peyton.

Luck didn't have one game where he put the team on his back and carried them. The three times he had a chance to create a signature moment (Ok State, and Oregon twice) he faded. When the team needed him to carry them he struggled.

When they have a big lead or when he was able to lean on a tough running game he was fine. But if he gets two scores down he couldn't do it.

Great QBs for me, have to have moments where they dominate the game. He was as steady a QB as there was in college last year but I never saw him have dominating moments.

That is why the hype is bigger than the player right now. He is clearly the number #1 QB in this draft because he has very little risk. However, from what I have seen on tape (DVR) he reminds me a lot more of Matt Ryan than Peyton Manning. That isn't a bad thing, but expectations have been unrealistically thrown upon him that I don't think he will live up to.

.I am surprised that the comments of Mayock has created such a stir

I am also....I still don't see what Mayock has said that caused so many people to get so upset.

Was it this?

"And they will continue to build around him," Mayock said. "The question is how well will NFL defenses adapt to what Carolina did a year ago and will Cam Newton continue to work as hard as he needs to to stay ahead of that curve?"

if so.....hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha....really?...hahahahahahahaha

One more small little thing. The reason I pull for Cam so hard is also because of the media and draftniks and their snarkiness about the chances of Cam being successful and the fact that 90% of the TV guys can't evaluate a QB but want you to think they are the smartest people in the room and are assholes when people disagree with them.

The opposite effect of the Luck hate I have where they have blown him up to unreachable proportions.

it helps when a QB has been with a program for a few years. It also helps you come to that conclusion when you aren't clearly the best athlete on the field each week.

If Luck could take over and dominate like Cam did in college single handedly.......his work ethic would be more blurry.

Comparing Luck/Newton isn't apples to apples.

I feel like I'm trolling you :) Honestly I'm not, I just don't understand your point of view.

Are you saying that because Cam is such a good athlete it's natural to question his work ethic because the game looks so easy? The reason that Andrew Luck isn't questioned is because he is not the best athlete so it's assumed he most work harder? So only the people who aren't the best athletes are automatically credited with having a good work ethic.

Gonna have to think on that one ............ not like I'm working hard at work now anyway:D

I don't blame you. It's not like the whole thread is about that or anything...

I am saying when a college kid is the BEST athlete on the field.....he can dominate. He can do that with a crappy work ethic or a great one. We know that can happen. Therefore, when you are looking at one of THOSE players coming into the NFL you do have questions about how hard they work b/c there talent is just so good.

Luck doesn't fall into that category. He can't take over and dominate regardless of how hard he does or doesn't work like a Cam Newton could do. Cam could dominate games if he didn't work hard.......he could dominate if he did work hard in college. Being as physically talented as he was in college COULD of allowed to him to succed w/o hard work.....that doesn't mean he didn't put in the work though. Sometimes with freak athletes there is a guessing game to that.

so why is this a question, when it has been answered already. why question is he willing to work at his craft when its been noted that he did and will.

Umm...I don't like Mayock as much as the next guy, but there's nothing wrong with that quote. "Will he CONTINUE to work as HARD...?" He acknowledges that Cam worked hard last season, but it's a question because you can't prove something that hasn't happened yet. No offense, really, but I thought that was obvious.

Can't it be a little of both? Great work ethic WHILE being a physical freak? While Luck isn't as much of a freak of nature as Cam, it's not like he's lacking "that much" in that department. 6'4, 240, built like a tank, and can knock defenders on their butts.

The work ethic questions coming from college, okay... that's fine. The work ethic questions that are arising now though? He has his flaws, do you truly believe that a lack of work ethic is one of those flaws though?

it certainly can be both. Cam is both I believe. I am just saying, coming out of college and only staying a year at a school.......you would have to be a little uncertain of a freak.

that's kinda what the whole thread is about.

I thought it was questioning his work ethic but if it is more about Mayok's opinion of taking Luck over Cam that is even worse. That opionion isn't ridiculous at all. Do you know for a fact that Cam is going to be better than Luck?

Hypothetically put Cam back in the draft this year with teams knowing what Cam did this year I bet the majority of teams would still draft Luck first. Not a knock on Cam but I think most people in the NFL are just that sold on Luck. Is that right or wrong? I have no idea because I haven't watched Luck play in the NFL yet like so many others apparently have.

i hate you guys for making me have to "defend" mayock because i don't like him either (although this might not be as much a defense but more a clarification...).

here's what he said about newton:

2 questions here...

there have been several threads about this. it's a good question. it's an honest question. some people say this is something to really be worried about and that it might bring about that dreaded sophomore slump that so many are concerned about. it can happen.

the second question, though, has people overreacting...

i know it's easy to look at that question and throw out the disrespect card and for too many that ugly race card. did you notice something in that question? there's a certain word he used that implies he isn't implying the thing you think he's implying.

can a person continue to do something they haven't done? no. stupid question. the implication there isn't that he hasn't been working as hard as he needs. it's that he has been working as hard as he needs. right?

now the question is...will he keep it up? well? will he? sure...maybe...he should...we have no reason to doubt it. but it's just a question. there wasn't some "i'm just not sure" statement at the end like there was with his pre-draft crappy criticisms.

now i'm still slightly perturbed by mayock's lack of ability and integrity to come back and say he was wrong about questioning whether or not cam's heart was in it. i blame peter king for that tweet he sent out and mayock's lack of research that people seem to think is impeccable.

it's without question that cam worked his butt off last year. now the question is, will he keep it at that level? will he keep that same work ethic? i'm sure he will, but then i'm a fan.

as far as luck vs. newton in the draft...let me ask this question.

who would you take in the draft if both of these guys were at the start of their career? peyton manning or tom brady? or drew brees? everyone would have a different opinion on that. there's no doubting peyton's intelligence. the dude is an OC behind center. is tom brady just a great QB or just a great system QB? is brees so good because most his games are in domes or is he just a great QB that can do it anywhere? these kind of questions have gone on for years and people will argue over them.

right now that question is being asked about newton and luck just like it was last year. those two will continue to have that question asked throughout their careers. RG3 may be thrown in there as well. just because someone doesn't pick newton doesn't mean that they are racist. it doesn't mean they aren't. it doesn't have to do anything with it.

btw...anyone notice the comments mayock made about RG3? mayock loves him. loves everything about him.yep. sounds like a racist to me.

re: luck...he said that luck isn't a once in a lifetime type QB and said he couldn't be put on the level with peyton. said more the level of sam bradford. yes. sam bradford. not peyton manning. sam frikkin bradford. and people are commenting on that a lot. some bordering on meltdown saying that andrew luck is going to make mayock "eat his words" at the combine.

go ahead and throw out that racist card if it makes you feel better or whatever. throw out that disrespect card. i don't think it's warranted here, but whatever.

just thought i would throw out a differing perspective.

ibtdefendingaracistbecauseimwhite crap.

Pretty much the best, most reasoned post in the thread...

...which is likely why so few people bothered to respond to it.
